4. The First Draft of the Materials
The developed materials consisted of three units which are explained below.
a. Unit 1
Unit 1 was entitled “Equipment on the Job”. It also represented the theme of the unit, which was built around the students’ needs; to prepare themselves for
future work. The unit was derived from standard competence number 2 and basic competences number 2.1 and 2.6.
The standard competence in this unit required students to be able to communicate in English on Elementary Level. Furthermore, the basic
competences required students to be able to comprehend simple daily conversation both in professional and personal context with non-native speaker
and comprehend simple instructions. There were 18 tasks in the first unit; 1 task belonged to warm up activity, 10
tasks belonged to listening and speaking activities, 6 tasks belonged to reading and writing activities, and 1 task belonged to reflection activity. The description
of each task can be found in the appendix.
b. Unit 2
Unit 2 was entitled “Co-Worker Relationship”. It also represented the theme of the unit, which was built around the students’ needs; to prepare themselves for
future work. The unit was derived from standard competence number 2 and basic competence number 2.2.
The standard competence in this unit required students to be able to communicate in English on Elementary Level. Furthermore, the basic
competence also required students to be able to take simple messages in both direct and by means interactions.
There were 18 tasks in the second unit; 1 task belonged to warm up activity, 8 tasks belonged to listening and speaking activities, 7 tasks belonged to reading
and writing activities, and 1 task belonged to reflection activity. The description of each task can be found in the appendix.
c. Unit 3
Unit 3 was entitled “Professional Experience”. It also represented the theme of the unit, which was built around the students’ needs; to prepare themselves for
future work. The unit was derived from standard competence number 2 and basic competences number 2.3.
The standard competence in this unit required students to be able to communicate in English on Elementary Level. Furthermore, the basic
competence required students to be able to explain job description and educational background in both spoken and written language.
There were 19 tasks in the first unit; 1 task belonged to warm up activity, 10 tasks belonged to listening and speaking activities, 7 tasks belonged to reading
and writing activities, and 1 task belonged to reflection activity. The description of each task can be found in the appendix.
5. Expert Judgment
After the first draft of the materials was developed, it was then evaluated. The expert who evaluated the developed materials was an M.A. holder and an
ESP and materials development expert. She is a permanent lecturer in English
