2. The Criteria of Non-Defining Relative Clause

On the contrary to the defining relative clause, Yule 2004 states the non- defining relative clause criteria as follows: The first is non-defining. The non- defining here means that the information in the relative clause does not restrict the meaning of the antecedent. The second is giving extra information. The extra information implies that the information is only considered as additional information. Without describing the antecedent, readers will still be able to know the meaning. The third is with the separation markers. The separation marker will convey that the relative clause is a non-defining relative clause. The fourth is after a proper noun. A proper noun indicates that the noun is already known by the readers. Inserting a relative clause to describe a proper noun will only present additional information. The fifth is with the quantity expression. A relative clause containing an expression of quantity will be considered as non-defining because 53 there will be a separation marker to connect the antecedent to the relative pronoun in the relative clause. The sixth is not with initial that or zero relative. Every relative clause containing relative pronoun that or zero relative Ø will categorized as defining relative clause. To deal with the non-defining relative clause, I matched the collected data with the non-defining relative clause criteria. The table below shows how the relative clauses in the features columns in the JP are considered as non-defining relative clauses. In addition, Important to be highlighted in this research that in one relative clause either defining or non-defining relative clause may not cover or contain all of the criteria above, but it does not reduce the attribute of the clause. Table 4.2: Non-defining Relative Clauses in the Features Columns in the JP 54 In the third example, the relative clause which will help make your pelvic muscles stronger as well as hasten your recovery from surgery matched the criteria of the non-defining relative clause. It could be seen through the appearance of the separation mark, the comma, which separated the antecedent, Kegel exercise, in the main clause with the relative clause. It implied that the information in the relative clause was not necessary to define the meaning of the antecedent and only served as additional information. The relative clause who spoke at the book lunch from example 4 in the table above also described a non-defining relative clause but with different relative pronoun who which referred to personal antecedent. The information given did not restrict the meaning of the antecedent which came in the form of a proper noun Ayu Utami. In connecting the relative clause to the main clause, we could also see the separation mark, the comma, between the antecedent and the relative pronoun to separate the antecedent in the main clause with the relative clause. The article below is the example of the article for the non-defining relative clause in the features columns in the JP: 55 Figure 3: The example of an article containing non-defining relative clause 56
