1. Relative Clauses Function to Modify Subject

In this research, I found 56 relative clauses which functioned as subject modifier Appendix 4, page 156. How the relative clauses function as the subject modifiers are given through examples in the table below based on some of the findings in the features columns in the JP. Table 4.3: Relative Clauses Function to Modify Subject No. Relative clauses DefiningNon- defining Antecedent Functions of the relative clauses 5. Iffat Amalia, who runs a separate home reputation, though part of the same extended family, found an outlet in Hong Kong. Non-defining Iffat Amalia Modifying Subject 6. In many places, carbide cannons that make loud sounds are no longer effective to drive elephants away. Defining Carbide cannons Modifying Subject Looking at table 4.3, the main clause of example 5, Iffat Amalia found an outlet in Hong Kong, had Iffat Amalia as the subject, found as the verb, an outlet as the object, and in Hong Kong as the prepositional phrase. When we inserted the relative clause to the main clause, it would describe or modify the antecedent, which, as noted above, was the subject of the main clause. Therefore, I decided that the relative clause who runs a separate home reputation, though part of the same extended family in example 5, served as the subject modifier. In 58 example 6, I found carbide cannons are no longer effective to drive elephants away as the main clause of the whole sentence. Carbide cannons functioned as the subject of the main clause, are served as the verb, and no longer effective to drive elephants away functioned as the subject complement. From the example, we could see that the relative clause was closely connected with the head of the noun phrase, carbide cannons, which functioned as the subject of the main clause and also served as the antecedent. Similar to example 5, the relative clause that make loud sounds in example 6 just gave additional information about the antecedent of the main clause, carbide cannons. Since the relative clause described the subject of the main clause, so it functioned as a subject.
