Relative Pronouns Function as Possessive in Relative Clauses

77 relative pronoun that … to occupied the place of the object of the preposition arts in sentence b. We can also see that the preposition to was put at the end of the relative clause. Therefore the function of that … to here was as the preposition relative. In other words, it seems as if the object of the preposition arts in sentence b was lost after being combined by the relative pronoun, but actually the object was there, but replaced by the relative pronoun that … to. Therefore, the relative pronoun that … to was considered as the object of the preposition within the relative clause.

4. Relative Pronouns Function as Possessive in Relative Clauses

Close 1975 mentions in this research that the possessive relatives consist of two relative pronouns namely whose and of which. Close 1975 adds that the relative pronoun whose will refer to personal and non-personal antecedents in defining and non-defining while the relative pronoun of which refers to non- personal antecedents in both kinds of the relative clauses. After analyzing the collected data, I found 16 sentences using those possessive relatives, which were divided into 9 sentences using relative pronouns whose and 7 sentences using relative pronouns of which, within the relative clauses. The points below are the explanation for each of the relative pronoun based on the findings. a Whose As stated earlier, in this research, I collected 9 relative pronouns whose which occupied the possessive’s position within the relative clauses Appendix 17, page 233. The table below shows how whose functions as the relative possessive within the relative clause. 78 Table 4.16: Relative Pronoun whose Functions as the Possessive No. Relative clause Antecedent Kinds of the Relative Clause Relative pronoun’s Function 24 “Perhaps soap making is rather complicated for them as it requires accuracy; any slight mistake will end in failure,” said Vero, whose small groups enable her to give participants personal attention. Vero Non-defining Possessive Example 24 above was produced by combining two sentences with the help of a relative pronoun whose . The sentences were: a “Perhaps soap making is rather complicated for them as it requires accuracy; any slight mistake will end in failure,” said Vero and b Vero’s small groups enable her to give participants personal attention. From the example we can see that relative pronoun, whose, took the place of the possessive pronoun Vero’s in sentence b. Therefore, the relative pronoun whose here functioned as the possessive relative in the relative clause, whose small groups enable her to give participants personal attention. b Of which Related to the relative pronoun of which, there were 7 relative clauses in the collected data using this relative pronoun Appendix 18, page 235. The table below shows how of which functions as the possessive in the relative clause. Warehouse Non-defining Possessive In Table 4.17, we can see that the relative pronoun of which combined the sentences: a three days ahead of the opening, artists were preparing their installations inside the spacious warehouse and b The spacious warehouse’s front wall is painted in hot pink into one complex sentence. Now, it is obviously seen that the relative pronoun of which occupied the position of the possessive pronoun the spacious warehouse’s its in sentence b. Therefore, it’s obvious that the relative pronoun of which functioned as the possessive in the relative clause construction. 80

CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter consists of two parts, namely conclusions and recommendations. I conclude the major findings in the first part while in the second part I provide the recommendations for English learners, English teachers, future researchers, and the journalists.

A. Conclusions

In this section, I will divide the conclusions into three parts, namely differentiating the defining and non- defining relative clauses, relative clauses’ syntactic functions in the features columns in the JP, and relative pronouns’ syntactic functions in the features columns in the JP. 1 Differentiating the Defining and Non-defining Relative Clauses In order to answer the first research problem, I collected all relative clauses and categorized them into defining and non-defining relative clauses. In this research, I found that to differentiate between the defining and non-defining relative clauses in the features columns in the JP, the readers could employ the defining and non-defining criteria from Yule 2004, as stated in chapter four of this research on page 49 and page 52. After analyzing the findings, I also found 179 defining relative clauses and 111 non-defining relative clauses. All relative clauses were appropriate to the defining and non-defining criteria which I employed in analyzing the data.
