B. Problem Formulation
Based on the description above, there are two problems which are going to be discussed. The problems are formulated as follows:
1. What kind of friendship do Mariam and Laila develop? 2. Why do they maintain their friendship?
C. Objectives of the Study
The objectives of the study are the goals of the study related to the problem formulation. The writer tries to find out the answers to the questions that are
stated in the problem formulation. There are two objectives to achieve in this study. The first is to find out the kind of friendship between Mariam and Laila.
The second is to find out why Mariam and Laila maintain their friendship.
D. Benefits of the Study
There are some benefits from this thesis that can be gained. The first is for the writer. From this study, the writer can answer the questions which have been
developed on the problem formulation. The writer can find the meaning of friendship itself. By finding out the answers, the writer can know the meaning of
life covered by friendship from two women from Afghanistan. The writer can learn about life experience through Mariam and Laila’s struggle. How they face
5 their hard life and maintaining friendship, although they are the wives of one man
who usually live jealously each other. The second is for the reader. By reading this study, hopefully the readers
can know the meaning of friendship and learn about life experience which is totally awesome. They would be able to reveal the messages from the novel.
Moreover, they can also learn many things about friendship. They would realize that friendship gives strong influence to human actions. Friendship is a piece
power of doing action in this life The third is for the teachers and the students. This study will provide the
suggestion of studying this novel. It may be helpful because it gives additional information in studying the novel, especially about the major character and her
life experiences. Finally, for other researchers who plan on conducting a study on Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns, it hopefully can help as a basic
reference to write a thesis on literature concerning friendship.
