Caring One Another Maintaining Their Friendship

53 wanted a third Mariam said she did. As gunfire cracked in the hills, they watched the clouds slide over the moon and the last of the season’s fireflies charting bright yellow arcs in the dark. And when Aziza woke up crying and Rasheed yelled for Laila to come up and shut her up, a look passed between Laila and Mariam. An unguarded, knowing look. And in this fleeting, wordless exchange with Mariam, Laila knew that they were not enemies any longer.Hosseini 265-266 From that night on, Mariam and Laila do their chores together Hosseini 267. They do everything together. They help one another. Naturally, they build friendship. They does not care about their wives’ competition. They do not want to attract their husband any longer since they do aware that they are wrong to decide marrying to Rasheed, a rough man.

c. Caring One Another

Moreover, they try to treat well one another. They care one another through a simple thing like hair treatment. “One day that winter, Laila asked to braid Mariam’s hair. Mariam sat still and watched Laila’s slim fingers in the mirror tighten her plaits, Laila’s face scrunched in concentration.” Hosseini 271 In this part, it can be found that Mariam and Laila care one another in maintaining their friendship. Living in Afghanistan as an Islamic country, Mariam and Laila are good moslems. That is why they accept Rasheed’s decision to do polygamy. Islam allows polygamy, as Rodwell 50 says that there is a verse in Koran which says that a man may marry to the orphans or other women. However, he may marry one up to four women, and if he is still fearful that he shall not act fairly, he may 54 marry one woman only. Rasheed can not fullfil that requirement. He mistreat his wives. One reason is that Mariam and Laila can not give him a son. One day Mariam and Laila try to escape from Rasheed. Rasheed becomes more abusive and rude. They feel sad to be with him. They want to go out. In that situation Mariam and Laila become closer. They raise up one another. As good moslems, they believe in Allah God. They believe in Allah’s purpose. “I’ll throw up,” Laila laughed. “I’m too excited.” “Me too.” “Thank you, Mariam.” “For what?” “For this. For coming with us,” Laila said. “I don’t think I could do this alone.” “You won’t have to.” “We’re going to be allright, aren’t we, Mariam, where we’re going?” Mariam’s hand slid across the bench and closed over hers. “The Koran says Allah is the East and the West, therefore wherever you turn there is Allah’s purpose.” 279 Based on the analysis above, it can be found that Mariam and Laila do maintain their friensdhip by caring one another. They show their affection to one another. It begins from a simple thing continously. Mariam does aware that Laila is her only one friend in the world. So does Laila. Based on Maslows’ theory of motivation in Kasschau 143-144, there are belongingness and love needs. Mariam and Laila gain their belonging and love needs. They love one another. They feel a sense of belonging. They also need to have self esteem and also self esteem from others.
