9.3 Availability of disaster related data, damage and loss data
The collection of disaster related data is complex as the institutionalization of disaster management and monitoring has started in 2002 through the establishment of the Department
of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation DDPM. It has been observed that disaster related information in Thailand does not have the consistency at DDPM main office and provincial
office. More detail data is available with Provincial office of DDPM and only selected data being reported to DDPM main office. At the national level, storm surge data has been
collected from 1951 from the Thai Meteorological Department but detail information related to impacts on physical or human features and losses are in scarce.
9.3.1 Chiang Rai
• Flood related data at Chiang Rai provincial level has been reported with consistency from
2003 to 2008. The number of events, the number of people, households and buildings affected, as well as the agricultural areas, roads, bridges damaged, and the amount of
economic loss are available for each and every of the six years. Flood related data at Chiang Rai city level is available through Provincial DDPM office in Chiang Rai from
the year 2003 to 2007. Some inconsistency can be raised essentially on the number of events and the total amount of economic loss.
• Drought data at Chiang Rai provincial level is available from 2004 to 2008 with
consistency. For each year the number of people affected as well as the number of households and the amount of agricultural areas damaged are reported. The amount of
economic loss is also for each and every year available.
146 •
Tropical storm data has been collected from the Thai Meteorological Department at the provincial level. Only the number, type and name of events per year are reported. No
information related to the impacts aftermath the tropical storm is processed.
• Landslide related data is available from the year 2005 to 2008 at the provincial level. The
number of events per year and the total provincial area affected are reported, except for the year 2008 where the area affected is not available.
