140 9 Data availability for further study

9.1 Availability of spatial data

ADPC first concern lies on the acquisition of relevant data for the study for each of the five cities. This type of data is essential for monitoring urbanization trends, locations of urban settlements and density, disaster related impacts, and climate trends etc. and are highly useful for forming an analytical view and comparative assessment. GIS base maps are available for each and every city but are used for different purposes such as Taxation. Building footprint maps for the five cities are available at The National Housing Authority NHA. The topographic map of Thailand is available; thus the topography of one specific city can be analyzed. The limited understanding between Thai institutions concerning the GIS data availability and standards is one of the challenges faced by the team during the data collection process. In fact, each institution opts for a particular projection system observed to be resulting in a substantial spatial shifting from one map to another.

9.1.1 Chiang Rai

GIS base map has been derived from the Municipality Taxation map and updated using data obtained from GISTDA.
