Presupposition into Its Type
In order to answer the first research problem, namely, how the presuppositional triggers hold to support the categorization of presupposition
occurs in countries’ and states’ slogans into its type, the researcher applied the
theory of kinds of presupposition triggers by Karttunen 1973. There are 13 kinds of presupposition triggers proposed by Karttunen 1973, namely definite
descriptions, factive verbs, implicative verbs, change of state verbs, iteratives, verbs of judging, temporal clauses, cleft sentences, implicit clefts with stressed
constituents, comparisons and contrasts, non-restrictive relative clauses, counterfactual conditionals, and questions. The explanation and example of each
have been presented in chapter II. The percentage of kinds of presuppositional triggers discovered in the countries and states slogans are presented in the figure
4.1 as follows.

Since the data gathered were listed alphabetically according to the
continent where the countries and states belong to, the researcher began the data analysis by analyzing the presupposition triggers occurred in countries in
Africa’s continent. There are 11
countries found in Africa’s continent which have slogans or taglines, namely Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Lesotho, Morocco, Namibia,
Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. The italic words below indicate the triggers.
