6. Social Issues

The sixth unit discussed about social issues that were appearing these last days. In Part A, the writer provided “The Threat to Kiribati” as the topic in reading part and the past, present, and the future conditions as the topic in listening part. Both the reading and the listening parts were followed by some questions to discuss. In Part B, the learners were to conduct a speech. They had to play roles either as a mayor or a vice mayor candidate who were going to have debates with the opponents. The discussions of the related grammar used in the speaking activities were provided in “Grammar Point”. The discussions covered present continuous passive, present perfect passive, and past habit. In “Words Bank”, there were some words provided. The learners were to find the meanings and the opposites of the words. The “Homework” in the last part gave the learners an instruction to read the reading text in unit 7 and to prepare themselves to practice interviews.

7. Interviews

The seventh unit provided opportunities for the learners to practice interviews. In reading part, there were some interview questions. The learners had to comprehend the questions in order to be able to answer the reading questions. The interview in listening part was directed to the immigrants in the United States. It was also followed by some questions to discuss. In the next part, Part B, the learners had to find a partner and conduct interviews. They could choose the topics provided in this part. “Grammar Point” in Part C discussed conditional sentence using “if”. While in 71 “Words Bank”, the learners had to find the verb, noun, and adjective of the provided words. They also had to complete the task by finding the meanings of the words. “Homework” in the last part directed the learners to read the reading text in unit 8 and to prepare themselves to ask for and give solutions.

8. Problem Solving

The last unit provided chances for the learners to practice asking for and giving solutions. In reading text in Part A, the writer provided examples of problem solving. There were two articles taken from magazines that discussed about asking for and giving solutions. In listening part, the problem discussed was about love, finding a girlfriend. The learners could practice problem solving in Part B. They had to make a group of three first and then could start the discussion to find the best solutions for all parties. “Grammar Point” in Part C presented explanations of the usage of gerund and giving suggestion. “Words Bank” that became the last part in this unit asked the learners to find as many words as possible that had similar meanings with the provided words. 72
