C. The Moral Values Revealed through The Major Character’s Bad
Experiences
Thomas English Hill states that The intrinsic value on which all value depends is an immediately felt
quality of experience that is not readily describable in the terms of any sort of experience. 1959: 221.
The intrinsic value is fully empirical sense of experience into cognitive
factors to analyze moral judgment. Moreover, the intrinsic value is able to test some objective criteria. It cannot be analyze in the short scale of experience, but it
scale from a large experiences. Nevertheless, each value of experience can be apprehended, it contributes to the whole experiences in the larger perspective
which more significance to value. There are statements of fact and statement of ethical principles in order to
establish the specific moral conclusion. Moral value is the idea of principle that teach person to be better action. People can learn moral value from their act,
especially their own experiences. The way to get moral values needs the agent who experiencing something important. From its experiences, the writer can get
moral values. The writer explains more about moral values that are revealed by Florens. Based on novel A Mercy, there are several values from the major
character‟s bad experiences which can be learnt. By looking the history, it is very clear that the slaves exist in America around 17
th
century. They are employed by white people. “He‟d gone to Angola, Portugal‟s slave pool, to manage shipments
to Brazil” 2009: 18-19. In such conversation between D‟Ortega and Jacob Vaark encounter to make deal with
D‟Ortega‟s debt, D‟Ortega who comes from Portugal

says that there are so many slaves in Portugal that he depicted as „portugal‟s slave
pool‟. Portugal is the country that many slaves are retained in that place. Then, many slaves are shipped by white people from Portugal to Brazil.
I welcome the circling sharks but they avoided me as if knowing I preferred their teeth to the chains around my neck my waist my ankles.
When the canoe heeled, some of we jumped, others were pulled under and we did not see their blood swirl until we alive ones were retrieved and
placed under guard 2009: 164. Around their journey, the slaves just look miserable. European people give
them bad treatment that there are no joy and peace inside the ship or canoe. In the difficult situation, some black slaves decide to die. They jump as prey of shark
when they move from ship to canoe. Therefore, ther e is no blood‟s slave that is
caused by white people. Then they prefer to die rather than die under control by whites.
1. Judging somebody should be based on realities
The first moral value can be drawn from the part of the novel when Florens judges her mother as the cruel mother in her life. It begins with the story
when D‟Ortega has bad debt to Jacob Vaark but he does not have enough money to pay all his debt.
Me watching, my mother listening, her baby boy on her hip. Senhor is not paying the whole amount he owes to Sir. Sir saying he will take instead
the woman and the girl, not baby boy and the debt is gone. A Minha Mae begs no. Her baby boy is still at her breast. Take the girl, she says, my
daughter, she says. Me. Me. Sir Agrees and changes the balance due. 2009: 7.
At first, Jacob Vaark makes a deal with D‟Ortega that the woman and the
girl are taken as the substitution of his debt because Senhor is not paying all his debt. Minha Mae proposes Jacob Vaark not to take herself. Minha Mae refuses

D‟Ortega‟s offering, the reason why she ignores him because she have a baby boy that still in her breast, therefore,
she cannot left him from herself. “Please, Senhor. Not me. Take her. Take my daughter” 2009: 26. Then Minha Mae begs not to
take her, but she offers her daughter that is still young. At that time, Florens is still child in the age of seven years old.
They wrote new paper. Agreeing that the girl was worth twenty pieces of eight, considering the number of years ahead of her and reducing the
balance by three hogsheads of tobacco or fifteen English pounds, the latter preferred 2009: 27.
Slaves are became trade at that time. Black people like stuff that is sold and is purchased to the other people. White people see slave not only to exploit
but also to employ them that can cultivate the land. Slaves have price to be sold. It is profitable to white because they usually obedient. Finally, Florens is sold as the
same other black people do. According to Maquire
“as a mother even at the risk of her own life watches over her own child, so let anyone cultivates a boundless love toward all
beings” 1978: 76. As a duty, a good mother should keep well her child whatever the risk that come to them. She loves her child from her deepest heart. A good
mother protects her child from any other disturbance. “Suddenly the woman smelling of cloves knelt and closed her eyes”
2009: 27. From the quotation, Minha Mae feels regret of what she did. She is disappointed with her decision to offer her daughter to the other owner. Actually,
Minha Mae just wants to release Florens from Senhor‟s cruelty. She assumes that
the new owner is not too cruel rather than Senhor did.
