Relating to the major character, Florens‟s maturity grows up. She is able to survive by her own in front of people
‟s attack. She does not need protection from any other people when she faces her problem. She can face her problem alone
even though it is ha rd to solve. In this case, Florens‟s bad experiences make her
maturity grows up. It causes Florens becomes stronger woman. She tries to tough to face all the problem and unfairness that she gets. Several bad experiences
actually can make good effect to somebody. From several bad experiences, somebody learn many problems in order to get better morality life. When
somebody is categorize become resilient person, heshe definitely survive for hisher problem which come up in the future.
4. Being respectful and being responsible to somebody
In the middle of the journey, Florens spends her night in the Widow Ealing‟s house. In the next day, there are several people who look daughter Jane
from witchcraft illness. They see Florens as a property. One woman speaks saying I have never seen any human this black. I have
says another, this one is as black as others I have seen. She is Afric. Afric and much more, says another 2009: 111.
Several white women moan Florens as black because white women have not seen her yet. They say,
“Afric” to Florens, they think that their race are the best human being in the world. “I am not understanding anything except that I am
in danger as the dog‟s head shows and Mistress is my only defense” 2009: 111. As an inferiority, she is aware that she is in danger in the middle of the white
people. In her thought, she is still thinking about Mistress. She is a good girl that

she is responsible to her Mistress. With her brave characteristic, Florens defends herself so that she could continue her journey.
I shout, wait. I shout, please sir. I think they have shock that I can talk. Let me show you my letter I say quieter. It proves I am nobody‟s minion but

With her cleverness, she shows her Mistress‟s letter. She proves to the
society that she is nobody minion, but she is under her Mistress ‟ errand which is
getting illness. Florens thought that white people shock to see herself because she is brave and clever. She shows that she has abilities to do as white people do.
White people shock of Flo rens‟s cleverness even though there are some
regulations that black people cannot get an education. After the sheriff read the letter, they are not stop to do bad treatment to her. They order Florens to take off
her clothes. After they order Florens to show her tongue and her teeth, they order Florens to dress up again. In this case, Florens is respect to the society although
she gets bad treatment from them. She is obedient under white people order. A
ccording to Wellman, “each person should be respected” 1975: 200. It means that human being should respect to the other people without diverge the race.
Florens is not against even escape from them, she just defends herself in front of society. She has responsible to accomplish her Mistress errand, therefore, she
proves herself that she is nobody minion, but her Mistress errand in front of them. As a human being, somebody should be respectful and responsible to the others
like Florens does. It gives good moral values to somebody who does it.

5. Being positive to look back bad experiences
Being colored is the hardest time in the past. Looking at the history of slaves, many black people are sold by white master. They are brought from Africa
in ferry then move in a boat or in a canoe. When the canoe heeled, some of we jumped, others were pulled under and
we did not see their blood swirl until we alive ones were retrieved and placed under guard 2009: 164.
Arriving at America, they are sold. European people offer slaves to the
other whites who have either plantation or farm. Slaves work as a servant. They usually work as a house servant or work as a farmworker. Black slaves try to
survive to continue their life in the new world although they are under control white people. Not only Florens and her mother, but also many slaves have the
same bad experience with it. “After times and times of puzzle about why I could not die as others did. After p
retending to be so in order to get thrown overboard” 2009: 165. White people treat slaves as non-human. They are very awfulness. In
that quotation, Florens‟s mother as inferiority looked suffer. She thinks that she
wants to die the same destiny with the other black to end her suffering. She feels weak in front of white people who have an authority to do everything they want.
Because of the cruelty, it makes the slaves depress. White people pretend them as nobody. As time goes, Florens
‟s mother is purchased by D‟Ortega and shipping to the north with the tobacco. In the D‟Ortega‟s house, Minha Mae and Florens
work. “Before this place I spend my days picking okra and sweeping tobacco s
heds, my nights on the floor of the cookhouse with a Minha Mae” 2009: 5-6. Florens and her mother work in D‟Ortega‟s plantation. They order to picking okra
