Background CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

This study employed Communicative Language teaching. CLT pays attention to functional aspect. It is suitable to be applied in this study since the topic of the materials will be about the daily situation. The focus of this study is to provide activities that enable the learners to practice their speaking ability. One of the characteristics of CLT is that communicative competence becomes the focus of the classroom goals and not restricted to grammatical or linguistic competence. So while guiding foreign guests the learners should not focus on the grammar.

B. Purpose

The purpose of this design is to provide the guides and instructors in Banyu Sumilir with speaking materials which hopefully can ease students’ learning and help them achieve the goals.

C. Content

The designed materials consist of 7 topics, which presented in 8 units. The topics were decided based on the situation on the learners’ working environment. Each unit consists of five activities that are classified in to two main activities, Pre- Communicative Activities and Communicative Activities. They are elaborated as follows: 1. Pre Communicative Activities include: a. Brain storming Before entering to the materials, it is better for the teacher to lead the learners to the topic by asking a general question related to the topic. It helps the learner to understand what they are going to learn. b. Practice this dialogue In this activity the learners were given a dialogue related to the topic between guide and foreign tourist. The teacher will give example how to read the dialogue. This activity enables the learners to practice their pronunciation or how to read word correctly. c. Expression PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI In this part the writer provide some expression related to the topic. Some of the expressions have been used in the dialogue as the example to help the learner to use the expression correctly. The writer also provides some other expressions related to the topic. c. Today’s magic words Since the learners were beginner learners, it is important for the writer to help the learners enrich their vocabulary. In this section, the writer writes new vocabularies or the meaning of difficult words from each unit. 2. Communicative Activity includes Time for grouping. Since the focus of this material is to give the learners a chance to speak, the learners have to be able to practice the materials orally. Time for grouping is an activity where each student should practice speaking using the target language. The units of he materials are arranged based on the order of the activities in Banyu Sumilir Unit 1: Welcome to Banyu Sumilir. “Welcome to Banyu Sumilir” consists of greeting and introducing. The guides and the instructors need this material to be the guidance when the meet foreigner for the first time or anytime the meet foreign guests at the first time. Before starting the activities, the guides and instructors held opening ceremony. Greeting and introducing is very important since they are required to be able greet anytime the meet guests and introduce themselves to the foreigner guests. Unit 2: Where’s the market? “Where’s the market” was about giving direction. The guides and instructors need to be able to give instruction to foreign guests since they can not accompany the guests all the time. Sometimes the guests need to have time to be free. They want to experience new things which are out of schedule. In this case guides and instructors
