2. The Possible Solutions to the English Language Education Study
Program ELESP Practice Teachers ’ Problems in Managing Classroom
during the School Practice Program
The second problem of the research was answered through the interview with six English Language Education Study Program students in the academic year of
2009 that have taken or have been taking the School Practice Program. Based on the interview results, the following conclusions were drawn. There were some
possible solutions to the ELESP practice teachers‟ problems in managing
classroom during School Practice Program. First, to solve the problem related to the busy students, the practice teacher might ask the busy students to sit in the
front row. After that, the practice teacher might regularly give them some questions related to the learning materials so that the students could be more
engaged to the learning activities. Second, to solve students‟ lateness that caused a
disruption, the practice teacher might set some rules about lateness, excuses, and absences at the first meeting. The rules themselves must be agreed by all members
of the class so that the practice teachers could minimize the number of the late students. Third, giving games related to the learning materials could be effective
to solve the problems about the less-motivated students. Another solution of this problem could also be to ask students to learn and to have a group discussion
about related teaching materials outside the classroom.
67 Fourth, the problem about pra
ctice teacher‟s inability to get maximum attention from the students could be solved by having a small discussion with the
whole class, about certain topics that were interesting for the students, like football or music, at the beginning of the class. By doing this, the practice teacher
could surely get maximum attention from the students. Fifth, to solve the problem about the students‟ involvement in classroom activities, the practice teacher might
give rewards to the students who were active in the classroom. Besides, the use of a group discussion and a role play could also be applied to make students actively
engaged in the classroom activities. Sixth, the problems about practice teacher‟s
inability to give clear instructions could be solved by having the instructions written on the handouts given to the students, or having the instructions written on
the whiteboard. Moreover, the use of simple language to explain the instruction could be helpful. The last problem was about the problems in incomplete school
facilities. To solve the problems, a practice teacher might replace the non-existent school facilities with other media to make the teaching and learning activities
interesting. The use of flashcards could be one of the examples of the interesting media. Besides, the use of games that included listening could be implemented to
teach listening.
