5.1.1. The Characteristics of Chick Benetto
Charles or Chick Benetto in the beginning of his life is considered as a person who is smart, introverted, indecisive and longing for his father’s love. He
can be considered as a smart person because he can graduate from elementary, junior high school and senior high school without any problem regarding his
mark. Furthermore, from the novel we know that Chick Benetto is an introverted
person. He does not have any close friend or family that can listen to his talks. Moreover, he just wants to talk with people who like to drink with him. Even in
his company, he does not have any close companion. Another Chick Benetto’s personality is indecisive. Chick Benetto always
changes his will and decision based on the most powerful influence on him. He does not have any firm heart to decide and to be strong in his decision.
Finally, Chick Benetto is an obsessive person. He is longing for his father’s love. He does not get enough love from his father which makes him tries
to pursue it by doing his father favorite sport. Moreover, this personality becomes bigger because his father leaves the family as a result of divorce.
5.1.2. Posey Benetto’s Influence on Chick’s Personality
Posey Benetto has a very great influence on Chick Benetto through her son’s life cycle. This influence is started when he is still childhood up to his
adulthood.
As already mentioned in this study, I compile the influence made by his mother by the theory of psychosocial development as issued by Erik H. Erikson.
This theory mainly discusses that human being in his or her personality development is categorized into eight stages. The stages are basic trust versus
mistrust, autonomy versus shame and doubt, initiative versus guilt, industry versus inferiority, identity versus role confusion, intimacy versus isolation,
generativity versus stagnation and integrity versus despair. From those eight stages, I just discuss the second up to the eighth because
the novel does not reveal the first stage. Briefly, the second stage, autonomy versus shame and doubt, occurs when Chick Benetto is still three years old in a
carnival and in a kindergarten. The third stage, initiative versus guilt, starts when Chick is still around five years old to face his mother and also to face his father.
The fourth stage, industry versus inferiority, is going on in Chick’s eleven years old. In this stage Chick intends to develop pride of accomplishment in doing
assignments from teacher or his baseball coach. In this stage Chick also faces a problem of being a divorce family. The fifth stage, identity versus role confusion,
is dealing with the attempt of finding self identity. Chick Benetto faces the problem of confusion with his mother’s rules which prohibits him smoking
although his mother smokes. The sixth, intimacy versus isolation, happens when Chick is in his twenties. Here Chick has a problem of the absence of love but he
has different understanding on how to avoid isolation feeling of the absence of his father compared to his sister understanding. The seventh, generativity versus
stagnation, happens when Chick starts to establish career and settles down
relationship. Here also happens the event which has powerful impact in his life as his mother passes away. His life becomes wasteful until he attempts to kill
himself. In this stage Chick has a personal meeting with his mother which really influences in his life changes. The final stage, integrity versus despair, happens
after Chick’s attempts of suicide. Here Chick contemplates all of his deeds and moves to a new life because of the influence of the personal meeting with his
“dead” mother.
