1. The Students’ Perception on the Use of Translation Exercises to Learn
Passive Voice
In general, the students gave positive responses to the use of translation exercises. Translation exercises were easy to be practiced because the students
could comprehend more about the material which was discussed. Translation exercises facilitated students in learning passive voice. The students could identify
both active and passive voice because they had learnt the pattern using translation exercises. The students could remember the pattern because they practiced
translation exercises in learning passive voice. Thus, translation exercises helped students improve their passive voice mastery.
Translation exercises were useful for students because they said that translation exercises were easier than their previous way to learn passive voice.
Before translation exercises were applied in learning passive voice, the students were familiar to listen to the teacher’s explanation. As a result, when the students
used translation exercises, they felt that translation exercises were helpful. Moreover, by using translation exercises the students could learn about translating
and improve their vocabulary mastery. However, the students found out some difficulties in using translation
exercises. They had problems in mastering vocabulary, in using be auxiliary, in using past participles V3 and in ordering words. Many students had poor
vocabulary so it would be a problem in translating sentences. Besides, the students forgot about be, past participle, regular verbs and irregular verbs and they could
not arrange the words into sentences well.

52 To overcome the vocabulary problems, the students consulted their
dictionaries. They used their dictionaries to find out difficult words. They also asked their teacher or discussed with other friends when they had problems in
vocabulary mastery. The students would try to solve others problems by reading books or notes and they also asked the teacher if they could not find the solution
to the problems. In conclusion, translation exercises had benefits for the students.
Translation exercises helped the students in learning passive voice so they could master the material much better. They preferred to use translation exercises
because translation exercises were easy to be practiced and helpful in facilitating students to learn.
