CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD
This chapter deals with research method which includes type of research, research instruments; form, context, and source of the data; techniques of data
collecting; techniques of data analysis; and data trusworthiness. Each of them is presented below.
A. Type of Research
The research was categorized as a descriptive qualitative research. A qualitative research refers to a research which produces descriptive data. It deals with
the possibilites to solve the problem by collecting, classifying, analyzing, and interpreting data. According to Bodgan and Taylor 1993:4, human being`s written
or spoken words and their observable behaviors are the example of descriptive data. This research was also supported by a quantitative analysis in which the researcher
used numbers and percentages counting the occurrences of the types and strategies of request.
Furthermore, Moleong 2001:163 says that a descriptive research concerns with providing descriptions of the phenomena which occur naturally with the
invention of an experiment or an artificial contrived treatment. It requires as many data as possible to get the pattern. Finally, this research aimed at describing the types
of request expressed by the characters in Office Space, and figured out the strategies of making request spoken by the characters in Office Space.
B. Research Instruments
In this study, there were two kinds of instruments of the research, i.e. primary and secondary instruments. The primary instrument was the researcher
himself since the research was a qualitative research. Bodgan and Biklen 1982:27 argue that the key instrument in qualitative research is the researcher himherself. In
this case, the researcher collected the data, made interpretation, made conclusion, and reported the result.
The secondary instrument in this research was a data sheet which was used to collect the data from the utterances containing request act in Office Space movie.
C. Form, Context and Source of Data
The data of this research were in the form of words, phrases, clauses and sentences taken from the dialogues by the characters in Office Space movie.
According to Bungin 2007:28, in conducting a qualitative research, the data which are collected must be in the form of sentences, utterances, or even short stories. The
data were analyzed based on the context in which the utterances occurred in this movie. The context of the data was the dialoguesconversations performed by the
characters in the movie. The source of the data was Office Space movie and the transcript of the movie downloaded from http:wwwimsdb.comscriptsOffice-
