CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter consists of two sections, namely conclusions and suggestions. The first section presents the conclusion, which contains the answers to the questions stated in the problem formulation. The second section provides some suggestions for future researchers who want to conduct the same study, for the eleventh grade students of Tiga Maret Senior High School and for the English teachers Senior High Schools. The detailed conclusions and suggestions would be described below.

A. Conclusions

The purpose of this study is to design a set of English supplementary reading materials using intermediate English level novels for the eleventh grade students of Tiga Maret Senior High School. Thus, there are two problems identified here. The first problem deals with the process of designing a set of materials and the second problem deals with the presentation of the designed materials. To solve the first problem, the writer conducted two types of design: Pre- design and Post-design survey study. The purpose of pre-design survey was to find out the students’ needs, lacks and wants before designing the materials. By using this needs analysis, the writer designed the materials. The writer conducted post-design survey to gain feedback and evaluation from the respondents which were very helpful in presenting the final version of the designed materials. 76 78 The writer adopted two instructional design models; they are Kemp’s model and Yalden’s model. The stages of two design models were combined and modified into the writer’s own stages as follows: 1 Conducting Needs Survey Pre-design Survey, 2 Determining Goals, Topics, and Purposes, 3 Learner Characteristics, 4 Formulating Specific Instructional Objectives, 5 Listing Subject Contents, 6 Selecting Teaching and Learning Activities, 7 Support Services, 8 Evaluating and Revising Post-design Survey. These steps are the main answer to the first question in the problem formulation. After evaluating the materials, the writer redesigned the designed materials in order to achieve the best final version of the designed set of materials. Based on the descriptive statistics on respondents’ opinions, the designed were good and acceptable. This is supported by the score of mean which was in range between 3.16 up to 4.00. The second problem was answered by presenting the set of English supplementary reading materials based on intermediate level novels for the eleventh grade students of Tiga Maret Senior High School. There are eight topics, with the titles of the novel, developed in this study. They are: UNIT TOPIC TITLE OF THE NOVEL 1 Expressing Love The Beautiful and the Damned 79 2 Expressing Happiness The Beautiful and the Damned 3 Expressing Anger The Beautiful and the Damned 4 Expressing Anxiety The Beautiful and the Damned 5 The Meaning of Christmas A Christmas Carol 6 Life and Death A Christmas Carol 7 Adventure The Adventures of Tom Sawyer 8 Runaway The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner Each topic consists of three sections, namely: A. Setting the Context B. Reading the Text C. Responding to the Text or Chapter
