.2 The Influences of Tom’s Relationship with Amanda on his Character

affects him to struggle for Laura. In detail, he wants to see Laura to have a soul mate and undergo a happy life. The close feeling makes Tom “…more faithful than I intended to be…” Synonymy, the more he far away from the apartment, the more he remembers about Laura—loyal to the struggle to make Laura happy Williams 1741. The relationship influences Tom to consider about his role to stay a little longer in the apartment for Laura. It influences him to struggle for Laura so that she can find a soul mate and enjoy living in the apartment. It makes Tom always remember his sister while he is leaving the family. Psychologically, by referring to the succession of progressive changes of Tom and to Tom’s reason to stay a little longer in the matriarchal family above, I can utter that Tom considers ideas in his mind to be spirited to do his activities. He is also influenced by his relationship with Laura so that he is encouraged to do it. These analyses are confirmed by Kennedy and Gloia 1999: 1947. They explain that characters have their own reasons to do certain things. It encourages them to do it. Here, someone’s main reason to do something is coming from the result of human’s thoughts that follow certain patterns Rohrberger and Woods, 1971: 13.

4.3 .2 The Influences of Tom’s Relationship with Amanda on his Character

Development The figure of a mother and a father as someone’s first inner self filler must do the nurturing with great responsibility in love atmosphere Gunarsa and Gunarsa, 1990: 7. I believe that if children are not taken care with great responsibility in love PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI atmosphere, there will be disturbance in their mind that will influence their behaviors. This thought is confirmed by Pohan 1972: 195, he states that when children are separated from their parents, the separation causes the disturbance of behavior and the emerging of psyche disturbance. The disturbance tends to about anti-social behavior, depression, and naughtiness that lead to criminal action. The statement is also supported by Hetherington et al as cited by Dagun, 1990: 149-151. He says that when children are raised by a divorced mother, the divorce itself cause psyche disorganization. It happens because the family uncertain condition. Referring to the statements, I can conclude that the separation makes no good atmosphere to treat children with great responsibility and in the love atmosphere. Amanda’s behaviors influence Tom. As a mother, Amanda has no responsibility in nurturing her children with love atmosphere. She cannot conduct an intimate relationship especially with Tom. This matter makes Tom has only fully affectionate feeling to his sister. The existing relationship with his mother is just merely a common one—no heart connection take part. The relationship which reflects no affectionate feeling makes disturbances in Tom’s mind. In their relationship, Amanda as a mother only understands the art of conversation with her gentlemen callers. She knew how to please her gentlemen caller through it. On the contrary, she does not know the art of conversation with her son. She just keeps on insisting him to do something without considering the tender way to do so. For example, when she raggedly advises Tom by using the word PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI “IDIOT” Williams 1705. The disturbance of Tom’s mind is clearly seen from his doing to satisfy his painful feelings by smoking and watching movies. Below are some examples of Tom’s trial to satisfy his painful feelings. They are listed in the following chart: Scene Pp. Remark 1 1698 Here, Amanda’s childish manner of advising makes Tom angry and tries to satisfy it by smoking. 3 1705- 1707 In the relationship with his son, Amanda does not understand the way to apply good manner of conversation. She speaks rudely to his son. She seems to neglect the need of implementing warm atmosphere to talk to embrace Tom’s heart. 5 1714 In this case, Tom does not like his father anymore. Since Amanda and Tom have no warm relationship, she cannot control him with love and care. 5 1718- 1719 Tom’s reason of going to see movies is not based on the prior conflict with Amanda, but it is based the boringness of being in the apartment. The boringness is referring to the empty relationship with Amanda. Those examples above are the relationship that influences Tom to find satisfaction of his heart through doing negative things. Toms tends to find satisfaction by unwisely smoking or watching movies. It influences on his personality which is easily triggered to do it. Tom is depressed by the relationship with his mother. It is not supportive for him. This problem is aggravated by his irresponsible mother who puts burden of supporting the family on him. She cannot show her effort to support the family. For instance, the breadwinner of the family is Tom, the twenty-one year old boy, and the one who is looking for gentlemen caller for Laura is also him. Those examples clarify that Amanda is irresponsible. This situation makes Tom’s feeling of pride to a figure of a mother is vanishing slowly but surely. Moreover, the relationship is not tightly bound with pride to a figure of a mother. The lost pride feeling to a figure of a mother causes Tom to act unwisely. Suppressed by the burdens, he must do everything only by himself. Although he lives with the matriarchal family, but he determines almost everything. Here, the condition of empty relationship leads to the anti-social behavior, naughtiness and depression. The anti-social behavior is showed both in apartment and outside it. In the apartment, Tom does not interact well with Amanda. He just undergoes his role as a son. Outside the apartment, he just works in the warehouse without trying to get close with people around him Williams 1740-1741. AMANDA: Didnt you call him your best friend down at the warehouse? TOM: He is, but how did I know? AMANDA: It seems extremely peculiar that you wouldnt know your best friend was going to be married TOM: The warehouse is where I work, not where I know things about people AMANDA: You dont know things anywhere You live in a dream; you manufacture illusions PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI Tom’s naughtiness is shown through his opposition when her mother says rudely to him. The naughtiness is also seen from his resistance to keep on watching movies despite his mother forbids him. Tom’s depression of living in the family comes from the relationship with his mother. It is not full of affectionate feeling. Furthermore, the burden he carries also adds his feeling to be more depressed. Tom has been through various things. They are affecting him to act in certain ways. The most principal thing is that the relationship influences him to satisfy his painful or uncomfortable feeling though smoking or watching movies. From the negative behaviors, I can conclude that it influences his personality as a young man to create the hatred inside him toward his mother.

4.3 .3 Tom’s Personality Traits after being Influenced by the Matriarchal
