keeps suppressing Tom so that he cannot say wisely to his mother. This condition makes Tom releases his anger because he is already fed up with his mother’s saying.

4.3 . 3.5 Tom is Revengeful

I believe that unpretentious and happy family is craved by everyone in this world. I also believe that parents who are concerning to his children are absolutely needed to construct a happy family and to raise high-quality children. At this point, Amanda’s matriarchal family does not fulfill the qualification to do it. The reason is that Tom cannot appreciate his irresponsible father, whereas the role of a father is very important in child’s development Dagun, 1990: 17. There are two main problems faced by Tom in the family. The first is the leaving of his father, and the second is Amanda’s unconstructive manners of treating Tom. The leaving of his father has a great impact on him. He does not honor his father anymore. This can be proven by his acting of not wanting to be equalized with his father and his sensitive feeling while his mother talks about him Williams 1714. AMANDA: Comb your hair You look so pretty when your hair is combed [Tom slouches on sofa with evening paper. Enormous caption Franco Triumphs. ] There is only one respect in which I would like you to emulate your father. TOM: What respect is that? AMANDA: The care he always took of his appearance. He never allowed himself to look untidy. [He throws down the paper and crosses to fire- escape ] Where are you going? TOM: Im going out to smoke. Tom does not care about his father. He goes away and tries to release his painful feeling by going out to smoke. He rejects to respect his father whatever the reason is. He has developed hatred in his heart unconsciously. This is the background reason why he is not willing to respect him. In the matriarchal family, Amanda cannot conduct an intimate relationship with his son. She occasionally conflicts with him. For instance, when she advises Tom like a child Williams 1698 and when she says rudely to him Williams 1705. AMANDA [to her son]: Honey, dont push with your fingers. If you have to push with something, the thing to push with is a crust of bread. And chew chew Animals have sections in their stomachs which enable them to digest flood without mastication, but human beings are supposed to chew their food before they swallow it down. Eat food leisurely, son, and really enjoy it. A well-cooked meal has lots of delicate flavors that have to be held in the mouth for appreciation. So chew your food and give your salivary glands a chance to function TOM: I havent enjoyed one bite of this dinner because of your constant directions on how to eat it. Its you that makes me rush through meals with your hawk-like attention to every bite I take. Sickening - spoils my appetite - all this discussion of - animals secretion - salivary glands – mastication Williams 1698 AMANDA: What is the matter with you, you - big - big IDIOT Williams 1705 Since Amanda cannot conduct an intimate relationship with Tom, Tom has an evil plan to execute. The plan is leaving the family Williams 1725-1726 as the father of the family did Williams 1725-1726. TOM: Im starting to boil inside. I know I seem dreamy, but inside - well, Im boiling - Whenever I pick up a shoe, I shudder a little thinking how short life is and what I am doing - Whatever that means, I know it doesnt mean PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI shoes - except as something to wear on a traveler’s feet [Finds paper.] Look JIM: What? TOM: Im a member. JIM [reading]: The Union of Merchant Seamen. TOM: I paid my dues this month, instead of the light bill. JIM: You will regret it when they turn the lights off. TOM: I wont be here. JIM: How about your mother? TOM: Im like my father. The bastard son of a bastard See how he grins? And hes been absent going on sixteen years JIM: Youre just talking, you drip. How does your mother feel about it? TOM: Shhh - Here comes mother Mother is not acquainted with my plans The dialogue between Jim and Tom above shows how Tom considers leaving the family subtlety. The word “boiling” means he is considering the plan. Referring to the relationship between Tom and his mother, the intention to leave the family is reasonable. The affectionate feeling to the family members is erased slowly by the bad relationship between them. I believed that unconsciously Tom has grown his grudge toward his irresponsible father who left the family for another woman. This grudge is fostered by unconstructive manners of Amanda to treat Tom. The grudge also affects Tom’s mind in the family, especially to Amanda, his mother. He has determined himself to execute his evil plan. Referring to Lawlor 1963: 30, Tom’s emotion mobilizes and organizes him more than needs. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
