Visual Character Variables Assessment

45 houses with traditional java architecture that make them as a common rural settlement area and have no attractive point as a landscape relatively compared to other landscape characters within Parangtritis Coastal Area.

4.1.2. Visual Character Variables Assessment

This assessment is the result of experts’ judgment on visual character based on variables of form, line, color, dominancy, scale, diversity, and continuity. Table 7 illustrates the given score for each type of landscape character based on those variables, as well as the total and average score of visual character for each landscape. Table 7. Those three landscapes have good quality considering their visual element of form, line, and color. They also give a good visual relationship between their landscape components. Different from visual preferences result, here the scrubland has higher score than river and woodland, though they still can be grouped into medium 46 quality of visual character. Scrubland offers a more dynamic visual than other two landscape types, as it shows more varied landscape components, such as sand, vegetations, and even the sea as the background, in some locations, which finally also affect the dynamic of natural color that come from their landscape components. The diversity variable also gives a good effect in river area, though not as strong as the scrubland. But, they are line and continuity variables which become the most affecting variables of visual character scoring for river. Meanwhile, the woodland seems to be more monotonous than other two landscapes because of its high density of vegetations and their relative similar in colors. Settlement area is the type of landscape with the lowest visual character score. Almost all variables of visual character show the lowest scores for this type of landscape, except the diversity variables, though it is not the highest score either. The spatial distribution of the sum of visual character variables scores can be seen in Figure 12.
