The explanation above becomes the motive for me to analyze the
strategies dealing with problems of non‐equivalence at word level found in
Stephenie Meyer’s novel entitled Twilight.
1.2 Reasons for Choosing the Topic
Novel is an interesting reading text for people. It can entertain and make the
reader imagine about something that is told by the writer. Novel, as a fiction, can
tell us something that is out of logic. By reading novel, the readers can let their
imagination to image the situation on the novel as free as they want. In Twilight,
the readers are to imagine about the life of vampire, which we will not see in the
real life.
Novels in foreign language are sometimes more interesting because it uses
different way to image the feeling of the writer. However, as some novels are
still in the foreign language, it is difficult for the readers who do not master the
foreign language to understand the story. I have chosen Stephenie Meyer’s novel
entitled “Twilight” as an example because this novel is quite popular among
novel lovers. Thus, I have some reasons for choosing the topic The Strategies Dealing
with Problems of Non‐Equivalence at Word Level. The first reason here is that
some non‐equivalence problems at word level occur when the English novel was
translated into Indonesian. There are words in source text, which do not have
direct equivalence in the target language. My second reason is that the non‐
equivalence problems at word level cause confuse to the readers. There may be
4
text in target language that seems unnatural because the translator wanted to
keep the meaning but as a result, the translation seems unnatural and confuses
the readers. My last reason is that I want to explain the non‐equivalence at word
level found in the novel and the strategies used by the writer.
1.3 Statement of the Problem
The final project is intended to answer a question. The question is “What are the
strategies used by the translator to solve the problems of non‐equivalence at
word level found in the Stephenie Meyers novel entitled Twilight?”
1.4 Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study is to solve the problem, which has been stated above.
The purpose is to identify and classify the strategies used by the translator,
dealing with the non‐equivalence problems the problems of non‐equivalence at
word level found in the Stephenie Meyers novel entitled Twilight.
1.5 Significance of the Study
