1 Misspelling
In the students report text, the researcher noticed several misspellings. The example of misspelling and the revision formulated by the researcher were as
follows: Buffalos are mamals see Appendix E, text 8.
revision: Buffalos are mammals.
This example presented the incorrect spelling mamals. Since there was no
spelling mamal in the dictionary, the researcher revised this incorrect spelling into the correct one. The mamals must be changed into mammals.
b. Errors in Punctuation
Errors in punctuation were discovered. It consisted of one part only. It was omission of punctuation.
1 Omission of Punctuation
This subdivision includes several main sections. The first section was omission of period. The second one was omission of comma. The last one was
omission of apostrophe.
a Omission of Period
The researcher found some omission of period in the students report text. It dealth with the absence of punctuation mark full stop . to end a sentence. Below
were an example of omission of period and the correct revision provided by the researcher:
Each arm has claws for self protection see Appendix E, text 11. correct revision: Each arm has claws for self protection.
69
As the example given, the omission of period occurred at the end of this sentence. It showed that this sentence were going to be discussed more, in fact,
nothing to be discussed. Therefore, the researcher revised to add a full stop at the end of the sentence.
b Omission of Comma
Omission of comma were identified in the students’ report texts. It occurred in a sentence when the students separated a transitional expression, linked two
main clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction, and separated a series items of list.
The following were an example of omission of comma when separating a transitional expression in a sentence and the revision formulated by the
researcher: When it jumps from one tree to another it spreads its four legs widely
see Appendix E, text 7. revision: When it jumps from one tree to another, it spreads its
four legs widely
. In this first example, the omission of comma occurred when linking two main
clauses. Therefore, the researcher had to insert a comma to link two clauses that
were joined by a coordinating conjunction as in When it jumps from one tree to another, it spreads its four legs widely.
On the other hand, here were an example of omission of comma when linking two main clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction and the revision
formulated by the researcher:
70
The giraffe is very tall animal in fact it is the tallest animal in the world see Appendix E text 9.
revision: The giraffe is very tall animal, in fact, it is the tallest animal in the world.
In this second example the omission of comma occurred when separating a transitional expression. Therefore, a comma should be used to separate this
transitional sentence before and after the ransition in fact as in the giraffe is very tall animal, in fact, it is the tallest animals in the world
. Below were an example of omission of comma when separating a series
items of list and the revision formulated by the researcher: The pouch is important to keep the baby fully grown, safe and warm
see Appendix E, text 31. revision: The pouch is important to keep the baby fully grown, safe,
and warm
. In this third example the omission of comma occurred when dividing a series
items of list. A comma should therefore be used to separate this series items of list
as in the pouch is important to keep the baby fully grown, safe, and warm. c
Omission of Apostrophe
In the students report text the researcher noticed several omission of apostrophe to mark posssession. It occurred in singular nouns and plural nouns
ending with -s. The example of omission of apostrophe and the correct revision formulated by the researcher were as follows:
The kangaroos meat contains high protein and low fat see Appendix E, text 1
revision: The kangaroos’ meat contains high protein and low fat.
