Most similes in the novel have been acceptably translated by Dian Vita Ellyati. There are 38 data (74,51% of the total data) classified as acceptable translations. Three examples of the acceptable data will be explained as follows: Example 1:

sentence above is when the old man hears the trembling sounds of flying fish passing the sea water near his boat at the dawn. He is interested to look at the flying fish. He really likes flying fish and loves them as his own friends. Therefore, he thinks and considers the flying fish as his principal friends in the ocean.
The simile has been acceptably translated by Dian Vita Ellyati. It can be seen that all contents of the simile are familiar and acceptable in Indonesian. The
word “they” in the simile which refers to the flying fish is acceptably translated into “ikan terbang” in the target language. On the other hand, Yuni translates this
simile less acceptably. It is because she originally keeps and translates the word “they” into “mereka”. In fact, according to the using rules of Indonesian, nouns
except humans must not be replaced by pronouns. Example 2:
His sword was as long as a baseball bat and tapered like a rapier and he rose his full length from the water and then re-entered it, smoothly, like a diver and the old man saw the great scythe-blade of his tail go under and the line commenced to race out.

The simile has also been acceptably translated by Dian Vita Ellyati. All contents of the simile are also familiar and acceptable in Indonesian even though
the term “baseball” is originally borrowed and used in the target language. It is because the sport term “baseball” has been familiar in Indonesian. On the other hand, Yuni translates it into “bisbol”. The reason she uses the term “bisbol” is probably to make it more acceptable in Indonesian. In fact, both of them are acceptable. Example 3:
Then, on his back, with his tail lashing and his jaws clicking, the shark plowed over the water as a speedboat does.

sentence above is when the old man has caught a very big and mysterious fish which is lashed beside his boat. At that time, a shark comes to attack his fish on the way he sails home. The shark is very strong, aggressive, and fierce. The way the shark plows over the water is similar to the way a speedboat does.
In this case, the translation of this simile is also acceptable. There is no problem with the contents of the simile. They are all familiar and acceptable. Besides, Dian does not break the using rules of the target language. The action

verb “plows over the water” is also translated as expressively as the original one into “menerobos air”. Therefore, the translation of this simile is also classified as
an acceptable translation. Similar to Dian Vita Ellyati, most similes in the novel have also been acceptably translated by Yuni Kristianingsih Pramudhaningrat. There are 40 data (78,43% of the total data) classified as acceptable translations. Three examples of the acceptable data will be explained as follows: Example 1:
He only dreamed of places now and of the lions on the beach. They played like young cats in the dusk and he loved them as he loved the boy.

sentence above is when the old man sleeps before he goes to do his long journey alone in the sea. At the night, he dreams about places and the lions on the beach. The simile of the sentence is intended to compare the playing lions to young cats in the dusk.
In translating the simile, Yuni changes the original image of the simile. The image “young cats in the dusk” which should be translated into “kucing –
kucing kecil di senja hari ” is changed into “kucing – kucing kecil di pasir”. It can
be seen that the adverb of time “in the dusk” or “di senja hari” is changed into an adverb of place “di pasir”. The translation actually becomes less accurate due to

of the simile. All contents in the translation of the simile are familiar, acceptable, and follow the using rules of the target language. Besides, the pronoun “they” which refers to the lions is translated into “hewan – hewan itu”. It is better than Dian who keeps the pronoun “they” and directly translates it into “mereka”. It is
because in the using rules of Indonesian, nouns except humans must not be changed into pronouns. Therefore, the translation of the simile is considered acceptable. Example 2:
They were shaped like a man’s fingers when they are crisped like claws.

The context of situation of the sentence above is about the description of a big Mako shark which comes to attack the old man’s big fish which has been
caught and lashed beside his boat in the middle of the sea. Specifically, it is about the description of the shark’s mouth and teeth. The simile is intended to describe the shark’s teeth which are as crisped as claws.
In this case, Yuni has also translated this simile acceptably. All contents and words contained in the translation of the simile are acceptable. She also does not break the using rules of the target language. It is different from Dian who translates this simile less acceptably because she misleads the image of the simile “crisped like claws” into “kering bagaikan cakar”. In fact, it will be unacceptable

if the word “crisped” is translated into “kering” or “dry” and paired to “claws”. Besides, Yuni’s diction “kaku seperti cakar” can convey the message of the simile
well. Therefore, the translation of this simile is also classified as an acceptable translation. Example 3:
In the night sharks hit the carcass as someone might pick up crumbs from the table.

It has also been explained previously that the context of situation of the sentence above is when the old man has sailed back to his harbo r. The old man’s mysterious big fish has been died because of the sharks’ attack during the way he sails back. When the old man has arrived at the harbor, the fish has become a carcass. However, the sharks still come back at night to continue attacking and eating the carcass. The simile of the sentence compares the way the sharks hit the carcass which is similar to the way someone picks up crumbs from the table.
Yuni has also translated this simile acceptably. According to the previous explanation, it can be seen that she gives some additional information to the simile
above. Firstly, she gives an additional word “kembali” to the topic of the simile “sharks hit the carcass” so that it becomes “hiu – hiu kembali menyerang bangkai ikannya ”. Secondly, she gives some additional words to the image of the simile. The image “crumbs” or “remah - remah” is translated into “tandas remah – remah makanan ”. It can be seen that there are two additional words, “tandas” and

“makanan”. However, the additions are acceptable in Indonesian. The other contents also have no problem. Therefore, the translation of this simile is classified as an acceptable translation.
