11/SL/38 Awan di atas daratan sekarang, muncul seperti gunung, dan pantai

11/TL/A/31 It has been explained previously that the context of situation of the

sentence above is when Santiago, the old man, enjoys the panorama of the sky on the first day of his long journey. The simile compares the beauty of the clouds on the day with the beauty of mountains.

Dian translates the simile accurately. All contents of the simile such as the topic, the image, and the point of similarity are originally kept. However, it can be seen that the plural i mage of the simile “mountains” is not also translated into a plural form “gunung - gunung”. It is only translated into a singular image “gunung” in the target language. Despite the change in the form of the image, Dian’s translation can still convey the comparative message of the simile. Therefore, this simile is classified as an accurate translation. Example 2:

So he hooked a patch of yellow Gulf weed with the gaff as they passed and shook it so that the small shrimps that were in it fell onto the planking of the skiff. There were more than a dozen of them and they jumped and kicked like sand fleas.

for some food to eat in the middle of the sea. At that time, he is successful to catch

a lot of small shrimps. The small shrimps are loaded to his boat. They fall onto the planking of the skiff. The simile compares the way the small shrimps jump and kick which is similar to the sand fleas.

Dian has been able to translate the sentence which contains the simile accurately. She keeps and translates all contents of the simile. The topic of the simile “they” which refers to the small shrimps is directly translated into “mereka”. The image of the simile “sand fleas” is also accurately translated into “kutu pasir”. Besides, the translation also creates no distortion or ambiguity. All

raters and the researcher agree to say that Dian has translated the simile originally and accurately. There is no word or phrase or information that is reduced or deleted. Therefore, this simile can be classified as an accurate translation. Example 3:

Then, on his back, with his tail lashing and his jaws clicking, the shark plowed over the water as a speedboat does.

yang bergemeretak, hiu itu menerobos air seperti laju perahu motor.

41/TL/A/105 The context of situation of the sentence above is when the old man has

caught a very big and mysterious fish which is lashed beside his boat. At that time, a shark comes to attack his fish on the way he sails home. The shark is very strong, aggressive, and fierce. The way the shark plows over the water is similar to the way a speedboat does.

and translated accurately by the translator. Moreover, the action verb “plows over the water” is also translated as expressively as the original one into “menerobos air ”. Therefore, the translation of this simile is also classified as an accurate translation.

Similar to Dian Vita Ellyati, Yuni Kristianingsih Pramudhaningrat has accurately translated most similes in the novel. However, Yuni creates more accurate similes than Dian. There are 38 data (74,51% of the total data) classified as accurate translations. Three examples of the accurate data will be explained as follows: Example 1:

The sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled; it looked like the flag of permanent defeat. 01/SL/9

Layar itu telah bertambal karung – karung tepung dan dalam keadaan tergulung seperti itu tampak seperti bendera kekalahan

abadi. 01/TL/B/8

It has been explained previously that the context of situation of the sentence above is the description of t he appearance of the sail of the old man’s boat. The simile is intended to compare “the sail” and “the flag of permanent defeat”. It shows that the sail has the same bad and poor appearance or condition as a flag of permanent defeat.

In this case, the firs t and the second raters assess that Yuni’s translation is accurate. It is because she makes no change and keeps all contents originally. The

image “the flag of permanent defeat” is accurately translated into “bendera kekalahan abadi ”. Therefore, the translation of this simile is considered accurate. Example 2:

When the old man had gaffed her and clubbed her, holding the rapier bill with its sandpaper edge and dubbing her across the top of her head until her color turned to a color almost like the backing of mirrors , and then, with the boy’s aid, hoisted her aboard, the male fish had stayed by the side of the boat.

19/SL/54 Ketika lelaki tua itu telah menombak dan memukulnya, memegang

pedang tajam yang ujungnya diampelas dan memukulnya melewati bagian atas kepalanya sampai warnanya berubah menjadi sewarna bagian belakang cermin dan dengan bantuan si anak lelaki menaikkannya ke atas perahu, si jantan berada di sisi perahu .

19/TL/B/54 The context of situation of the simile above is when the old man recalls his

experiences in catching some fish at past. At that time, he works together with the boy. They struggle to catch a pair of marlin. However, only the female one can be

caught. The old man dubs the fish’s head using a sharp rapier. The color of the fish becomes similar to the color of the backing of mirrors because of its blood.

Yuni has translated this simile accurately. There is no distortion or ambiguity in her translation. The translation “warnanya berubah menjadi sewarna bagian belakang cermin ” is clear and accurate. It is because the translation can accurately convey the message of the simile that the fish’s color becomes similar

to the color of the backing of mirrors. Therefore, the translation of this simile is classified as an accurate translation.

Then, on his back, with his tail lashing and his jaws clicking, the shark plowed over the water as a speedboat does.

41/SL/113 Kemudian , dengan tubuh terbalik dan ekor melecut – lecut serta

rahang mengatup, hiu itu melaju di air seperti sebuah perahu motor.

41/TL/B/112 It has been previously explained that the context of situation of the

sentence above is when the old man has caught a very big and mysterious fish which is lashed beside his boat. At that time, a shark comes to attack his fish on the way he sails home. The shark is very strong, aggressive, and fierce. The way the shark plows over the water is similar to the way a speedboat does.

The same as Dian’s translation which is assessed accurate, all raters and the researcher agree to say that Yuni has also translated this simile accurately. They argue there is no problem with the contents of the simile. They are all

accurately translated in the target language. However, the action verb “plows over the water” is translated into “melaju di air”. It is different from Dian who translates it into “menerobos air”. Even though some parts of Dian’s and Yuni’s translations are different, all raters and the researcher still argue that both of the translations are accurate. Therefore, the translation of this simile can be classified as an accurate translation.
