In the middle of [3], she applied the filler in her answer when she was asked about the future of American politics. In the eighth video, there were 61 fillers that
found. Somehow, she felt doubtful to express her words in answering the question. She might think whether the questioner understood or not about her
answer. Finally, all the Hillary’s utterances in the videos conformed to fillers. She
made a lot of meaningless parts which did not alter the point or ideas of her statements in her speeches or interviews. It happened because she had to avoid the
wrong statement that might be able to appear misunderstandings but it was not because she was lack of confidence. The researcher looked in the videos, Hillary
was so confident when answering the questions. She just wanted that the audience could understand about what she was saying.
2. Intensifiers
Intensifiers such as so, just, very, and quiet indicate more characteristic of women’s language than men Fillmore et al., 1974
. So is claimed as “having
something of the eternally feminine about it”. It also to hedge in this situation is to seek and avoid making strong statement as a characteristic of women’s speech. As
a woman, Hillary also applied this kind of features in her utterances. There were 261 intensifiers that appeared in the videos. The intensifiers that were used by
Hillary in the selected videos were so 87, really 5, just 146, very 6, and too 17.
In this case, the researcher found how intensifiers were often used by Hillary in her speeches or when she was interviewing. In the videos, Hillary used
words in [4] when she opened and closed her speeches or her speaking. In those words, Hillary applied an intensifier.
[4]
”
Thank you so much.”
From statement [4], it could indicate that she really appreciated about the audience’s appreciation for her. She wanted to express her feeling when the
audience gave big applause by putting intensifier ‘so much’ after saying thank you in the beginning or ending of her speeches. That intensifier could be found in the
most of the selected videos. In the second video, the researcher also found some of intensifiers that
used by Hillary. There were 20 intensifiers that found. They were so and just. At that time, Hillary gave a formal speech about the remarks of American leadership.
Here is a piece of her speech.
[5]
”
A related lever of power is development, and we are helping
developing countries grow their economies not just through traditional assistance but also through greater trade and investment, partnerships
with the private sector, better governance and more participation from women.”
From statement [5], she put words ‘not just’ in the middle of her statement. In that case, she gave two alternatives of economies development. The researcher
believed that she used ‘not just’ in order to make the audience understand that there were two alternatives to solve the economic problem.
In other cases, Hillary also used intensifier just in her utterances when she was interviewed by Amanpour. They were discussing some hard choices in
the Hillary’s administration but in statement [6], they were talking about the relationship between Hillary and her husband, Bill Clinton. It could be found in
the tenth video. In the statement [6], she put intensifier just without word not. It could indicate that in her statement, there were only two people who involved in
that situation, just her and her husband.
[6] “We went down the stairs, down the long hall into an office that surprised all of his security people, who jumped up, into an inner
sanctum, just he and I.”
Another intensifier that used by Hillary was really. It was found in some utterances in her speaking. One of evidences could be seen in statement [7], in the
first video.
[7] “Today I saw an article on the front page of USA Today that really struck me, written by a journalist who lives in Baltimore.”
In that case, she seemed like she did not have any ideas how to convey her feeling towards the news that she saw. She looked shocked when she saw that article. She
wanted to let the audience know it by using really in her statement. The intensifier was put at the end of her statement to strengthen her point so that the audience
could know what Hillary was feeling at that time. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
Briefly, she applied this feature in her utterances to strengthen her feelings or her statements so that the audience would understand what she meant.
The researcher believes that it was one of her anticipations, in case; the audience might remain unconvinced about her statements.
