Briefly, she applied this feature in her utterances to strengthen her feelings or her statements so that the audience would understand what she meant.
The researcher believes that it was one of her anticipations, in case; the audience might remain unconvinced about her statements.
3. Super Polite Forms
In the same sense a request may be a polite command; it does not need obedience overtly, but suggest something to be done as a favor to the speaker. An
overt order as in imperative expresses the assumption of the speaker’s superior position the addressee, carrying with it the right to enforce compliance Lakoff,
1973 as cited by Fillmore, G. et. al, 1974. The researcher found some super polite forms in Hillary’s utterances. There were 24 forms that appeared in the videos. It
was not in every video, but just in some of the selected videos. In the fourth video, the research found 12 super polite forms and in the
tenth video, the research found 3 super polite forms that appeared. The researcher mentioned two of them in statement [8] and [9].
[8] “Im delighted to be joined here by a number of officials and dignitaries, including your Chancellor, Martin Mc Aleese, whom I have
had the pleasure of meeting before when he was the spouse of a president.”
[9] “Well, Im very pleased.”
From statement [8], the researcher assumed that she was enthusiast joining the conference. At that time, she delivered and talked about the remarks on human
rights. Some officials and dignitaries also came attending that conference. So, she used that super polite form in her speech. It was same with the forms in tenth
video. Statement [9] showed that Hillary was glad because she was welcomed very well by Amanpour, as the presenter, and also by the audience. As a leader
and also as a woman, she wanted to look dignified so she used that women’s language feature.
That feature also appeared in the eighth video. In that video, Hillary used that feature in answering the question that was given by Haass. At the moment,
they were talking about the conditions of United State of America that needed more constructive relationship within their own hemisphere. She would like to
change the American’s psychology so that they could get out from that situation. She used that feature to show what she said was about a serious matter to be heard
and considered. The researcher assumed that she believed that American’s psychology could be changed.
[10] “And so I would like to change the psychology of this issue. Weve been in a corner for too long. We need to get out of the corner.”
Finally, Hillary Clinton used super polite forms in her utterances, even it was in formal and informal situations. It happened because she had to keep her
authority as a leader even though she is a woman. She wanted to show that woman who had high position in the government still could act as women in the
most. By using the forms, she could show that a high position could not make her, as a woman, being arrogant and could not arrange her words appropriately.
4. Hypercorrect Grammar
