F. Research Procedure

This part discusses the procedure of how the study is conducted in the pre- design study, the material development and the post-design study.

1. Pre-design Study

In the beginning of the study, the writer conducted the preliminary study by conducting the informal interview with the English teachers of SMA BOPKRI 2 Yogyakarta. It aimed to find out the problems faced by the students especially with listening in class and to dig up whether CBI and the use of films are appropriate solution to the students’ problems in listening lesson. Following the results of the interview and based on the writer’s observation when doing macro teaching PPL II, the writer decided to design English supplementary listening materials using films for the eleventh grade students of Language Department of SMA BOPKRI 2 Yogyakarta. 51 In designing the supplementary materials, the writer conducted diagnosis of needs by means of distributing questionnaire to the eleventh grade students of Language Department of SMA BOPKRI 2 Yogyakarta. The results of the diagnosis of needs presented the participants’ statements about listening activity in class, difficulties in listening, interests and needs for listening activity. Subsequently, the results of the diagnosis needs were used to determine the topics, formulate the indicators, select and organize content, and select and organize learning experiences.

2. Material Development

In material development, the writer designed the English supplementary listening materials and selected the sources needed for designing the materials. The selection of the sources involved selecting appropriate films for the eleventh grade students of Language Department. Afterwards, the writer prepared the evaluation device; that is, questionnaire for the users and the experts to evaluate the designed materials and to give feedback to improve the designed materials.

3. Post-design Study

In the post-design study, three English teachers of SMA BOPKRI 2 Yogyakarta and two lecturers of the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University evaluated the designed materials. Having had the results of the evaluation, the writer revised and improved the designed materials. Then, the writer presented the final version of the designed materials. CHAPTER IV RESEARCH RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter discussed the results of this study. This chapter was divided into three parts. The first part was pre-design study and was dealing with the results of the diagnosis of needs. This part discussed the results of the preliminary study and the pre-design questionnaire. The second part was materials development and concerned with developing a preliminary form of the materials that can be evaluated. The third part was post-design study and discussed the results of the evaluation of the designed materials based on the feedback from the users and the experts, namely the English teachers of SMA BOPKRI 2 Yogyakarta and the lecturers of the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University.

A. Pre-design Study

In this part, the writer discussed the results of the Diagnosis of Needs; that is, the preliminary study and the pre-design questionnaire distributed to the eleventh grade students of Language Department.

1. Diagnosis of Needs

In this study, diagnosis of needs was regarded very important since it aimed at finding the students’ needs and interests. It would be used as a basis in designing the materials. Nevertheless, before distributing the pre-design questionnaire to the students, the writer conducted preliminary study by 52 PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
