To help her sister to end her misery

48 against her own internal conflict. In one hand, she wants to have freedom but on the other side of it, she is afraid to lose her lovely sister as well. Before she files the lawsuit, she is an obedient child. She will do whatever her mother asks her to do. However, since she is motivated to change her boring and unjust life she braves to fight against her own mother. She defends her right by herself because no one will struggle for her. After facing lots of difficult situations and hard moments, she reaps the fruit. Finally, she gets her right back. The final judgment wins her lawsuit. The analysis above shows that Anna does not get the right toward her own body. Her right is imprisoned inside her duty to be her sister’s keeper. That is why she wants to have her right back. What motivates her to do the action is for fulfilling her esteem needs that is not satisfied yet. As what is sated in Feist and Feist, Maslow states that esteem needs including “desire for strength, for achievement, for adequacy, for mastery and competence, for confidence in the face of the world, and for independence and freedom” 283. Anna wants to be her herself, to be fully developed her potential, to be more confident, to be more independent, and to get freedom in her life. That is why she is motivated to have right and freedom.

This illness included in a deadly illness that the rate of survival is very low. It is about twenty to thirty percent if it is handled immediately 32. Kate has to be medically treated immediately after the illness attacks her body. At that time, her condition is very bad. Fortunately, her mother is a very great mother. She will do her best and struggle hard for Kate to stay alive. At that time, saving Kate’s life seems an impossible thing. To get a perfect donor for Kate is hard to find. However, Sara does not lose her grip. She is brave to take a big decision to make a perfect match for Kate through baby designer process. At that time, baby designer process becomes a contravention among the society. After getting the perfect match donor, Kate has to undergo the complicated and painful treatments repeatedly. She often relapses. It requires her to be treated, to be hospitalized, and to endure many surgeries. At first, what she needs is umbilical cord to heal her illness and she gets it from her newborn sister. However, nothing in cancer is a sure thing 323. The treatment for leukemia is not stop in the first treatment. The next treatments are always should be considered because what will happen next after the first treatment is unpredictable. What makes APL is difficult to be treated is because it is a chemo resistant disease 60. Kate needs to endure chemotherapy to kill off the diseased cells and put her into remission. However, the chemotherapy process has many side effects. It is terrible for two years old girl to have chemotherapy. Chemotherapy will cause nausea and vomit to the patient. Moreover, she will lose her hair too 61. She PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 50 may also get diarrhea. When her immune system is low, she will get infection and shall be hospitalized. The chemotherapy also affects her development as well. Poorly she has to do the chemotherapy for many times. The APL treatment does not end with chemotherapy. When Kate gets relapse, with hemorrhaging, fever, cough or infection as the signs, she needs to be hospitalized to get further treatment. Sometimes, Kate gives up with such condition. She realizes that she becomes the burdens for everybody in the family. She knows that she is the reason of Jesse’s bad behavior, Anna’s feeling unhappy, her mother’s career losing, and other chaos situations. Jesse grows up badly, Anna is unhappy, her mother lost her career and her father has to work very hard. That guilty feeling haunts her much. Besides, she gets bored to have such kind of life. She gets sick of the illness, the chemotherapies, the medicines, the injections, the operations and other painful treatments. Because of that illness, she gets lonely. She has to do many medical treatments that require her to stay long in the hospital. She has no time to have education at school. Moreover, she does not have any friend like other common girl in her age. There is no chance to play, to hang out and to enjoy her childhood and adolescence moment. This loneliness feeling makes her depress and loses her spirit to life. Those all peril feelings motivates her to stop the treatment. She wants to end her misery as well as her family’s suffering. However, she knows that it is impossible to do it with her own effort. She knows that the mother will not allow her to stop the treatment, so she needs other person who absolutely can give beneficial help. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 51 Anna’s mother is a very ambitious mother. She really wants to protect her sick daughter’s life. Even when the doctor is uncertainty to do the transplant, because the Kate’s condition is too weak to endure the transplant, the mother insists to do the treatment. She tries to do the best for her daughter so that she will not lose Kate. She really loves Kate. She will give everything for her, even her own life. “ I’d give her half of my heart, for God sake, if it is helped.” 165. Kate does not want to continue the treatment. She is getting sick off the treatment that she has experienced more than thirteen years. “Before I could ask any of this, Kate spoke. ‘I’m not doing it again, all right? I’m sick of it. The hospitals and the chemo and the radiation and the whole freaking thing. …’” 363 However, her mother is a hardheaded person. She will never give up to save Kate’s life. Therefore, Kate decides to convince Anna’s help. Actually, Kate never asks Anna to file the lawsuit but she asks Anna to kill her. At first, Anna is surprised to know that Kate wants to stop the treatment. She tries to remind Kate that everyone supports her to stay alive so she has to continue the treatment. “‘No,’ Kate said. I’m just sick of waiting for something that’s going happen anyway. I think I’ve fucked up everyone’s life long enough, don’t you?’ ‘But everyone‘s worked so hard just to keep you alive. You cannot kill yourself.’” 373. At that time, Anna is willing to donate the kidney although deep inside her heart she wants to be free from the organ donation. Moreover, she is afraid to have an invasive surgery. However, she loves her sister very much, that is why she is willing to donate her kidney. Though Anna is willing to donate her kidney, Kate is the one who refuses it. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 52 Then after some time Anna decides to fulfill Kate’s request. As a sister, she can feel what her sister feels. She cannot bear to see her sibling lives with such very bad condition. She really wants to help her lovely sister. She does not want to cause Kate to die, but she knows that her sister does not want to live with such condition longer 374. Meanwhile, the only one who can fulfill Kate’s request is Anna. She knows that Kate cannot do it by herself because if the mother knows that Kate wants to kill herself, it will kill her too, so she needs Anna. Anna is brave to take an action that may cause her sister’s death because she loves her sister very much. She knows that her sister does not want to go through with the treatment anymore. The consequence may unacceptable for everyone who loves Kate. Anna does not want to do it but she has to do it. It is hard for Anna to do what she does not like. She knows that the consequences of her action will hurt everybody who loves Kate, include her. It is like what is stated by Jung, “Sometimes our wisdom prevails and our decisions lead to positive outcomes, whereas at other times we live to regret and suffer the negative consequences and attendant misery of what turned out to be poor decisions.” 76. This is one basic reason why Anna is motivated to stop her organ donation to her sister. She cannot bear to see her sister live badly. She loves her sister very much. Therefore, when Kate asks for help, she is willing to help though it may cause a very bad effect for her sister’s life. Anna wants to fulfill her love and belongingness needs. She wants to show her love to her sister through that action. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 53

Everyone always has needs to fulfill. Motivation leads someone to do anything to fulfill hisher needs. People will do actions that will help them to achieve the goal, which is need, even if their action will give bad impact to others. This kind of situation happens to Anna. Anna is motivated to reach her dream though it will give bad impact to her sister’s life. There are two main points that can be concluded from the analysis of the previous chapter. They are the description of Anna’s personality and the analysis on Anna’s motivation to stop her organ donation to her sister. In analyzing Anna’s character, theory of character and characterization proposed by Murphy and theory of personality proposed by Hurlock are implemented. Anna is the focus character of the novel because she is given more attention than the other characters. From Anna’s real name, Andromeda, it is the most suitable name for her since it represents Anna’s fate. Meanwhile, from the personality trait, it can be concluded that Anna is smart and well developed. Her 53 PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
