df = N

– 2 df = 68
df = 35 + 35 – 2
df = 70-2 Therefore, the degree of freedom df is 35+35= 70-2= 68 and the critical
value with the df= 68 at 0.05 alpha level of significance α is 1.65.
C. Testing of Hypothesis
This study attempts to prove whether the use of short story has any influence towards students’ mastery of simple past tense. The results of the t-test,
both manual and using SPSS Statistic Product and Statistic Solution are the same. They show that the experimental class had higher score than the controlled
class from beginning, similarly, the result of t-test for post-test in the experimental class.
Based on the results of the gain score, this study concludes that there is a significant difference between measurement score in the experimental class and
the controlled class M
x
= 25.14, M
y
= 17.29, SD
x
= 13.90, SD
y
= 17.12, t 68 = 2.10, p= 0.39.
To prove the hypotheses, the data gained from the students’ test are
calculated by using t-test formula with the assumption as follows: 1. If t
o
t
table
: the alternative hypothesis H
a
is accepted and the null hypothesis H
o
is rejected. It means that there is a significant difference between the results after teaching simple past tense by using short story.
2. If t
o
t
table
: the alternative hypothesis H
a
is rejected and the null hypothesis H
o
is accepted. It means that there is no significant difference between the results after teaching simple past tense by using short story.
Based on the description of calculation above, it can be inferred that: 1. The value of t
table
with df= 68 in the significance 5 is 1.65. 2. The value of t-test is 2.10
From this result, the t-test is higher than t-table 2.101.65. Therefore, the null hypothesis H
o
is refused and the alternative hypothesis H
a
is accepted. It is concluded that there is a significant difference between
students’ mastery in learning simple past tense by using short story.
D. Data Interpretation
Based on the result of analysis data and testing hypothesis above, the interpretation of data is
short story gives positive influence on students’ mastery of simple past tense at the second grade students VIII SMP of Puspita Bangsa.
Ciputat in the academic year of 20122013.

CHAPTER V CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
A. CONCLUSION
Based on the research conducted in grade VIII.1 and grade VIII. 2 at SMP Puspita Bangsa, Ciputat in academic year 20122013, in which the gain score of
the experimental class was found to be higher, it can be concluded that short story technique could influence students’ mastery in learning simple past tense.
Teaching simple past tense by using short story has given a positive influence. The mean of experiment class which use short story is bigger than the mean of
control class. The result of the analysis in the research showed that t-test t
value of gain score is bigger than t
table
t
t
at significance level. It means that the Null Hypothesis H
is rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis Ha is accepted. Thus, the use of short story has a positive effect on the students’ mastery of simple past tense.
B. SUGGESTION
Based on the conclusion above, the writer would like to give the following suggestions:
1. The teachers have to be creative in order to make the teaching and
learning process become more interesting, effective, and comfortable for students.
2. The teachers have to know the methods in learning and teaching in
order to be able to choose the suitable methods and materials in the classroom.
3. The teachers had better be a flexible person, not only teaching, giving
critique, asking and questioning but also sharing, receiving critique from the students to know whether their teaching ways are effective and
interesting for the students.
