Techniques and Instruments for Data Collection and Data Analysis

that the Tropic Thunder movie, which uses English, and its Indonesian subtitle are non-simultaneous translation. The movie used slang expressions a lot and in the translation process into Indonesian language, the message contained in those expressions could be lost. The researcher assumes it is necessary to analyze the accuracy and naturalness of the meaning. The data are collected by closely observing the slang expressions found in the movie as the SL and Bahasa Indonesia subtitle as TL.

C. Techniques and Instruments for Data Collection and Data Analysis

According to Moleong 1991:4, in qualitative research, the researcher himself or with the help of other people is the main data collecting instrument. Thus, the researcher himself is the instrument of the research. The design of the research was made by the researcher. The researcher also collects, analyzes, interprets data and reports the result of the research. Meanwhile, this study also uses additional instruments, such as the dictionaries, data sheet, and computer to collect and classify the data. The researcher also asks help from two students of English Literature to determine the level of naturalness of slang expressions translation. The two students took on Translation discipline, so the researcher thinks that they have a competence to determine the level of naturalness. The value of the naturalness level is fully from the personal judgment of the two readers. Further, in this research, they will be mentioned as Reader 1 and Reader 2. The data are taken from slang expressions found in dialogues on Tropic Thunder movie and its Indonesian subtitle. First, the researcher identified the slang expression in the dialogue and looked for the equivalence of meaning and its naturalness in the Bahasa Indonesia subtitle. The data were analyzed using content analysis technique. The followings are the steps of data analysis: 1. The researcher watches the movie and reads its English and the Bahasa Indonesia subtitle repeatedly. 2. The researcher identifies and lists expressions which can be categorized as slang expressions. 3. The researcher analyzes the data by comparing the meaning accuracy and expression naturalness of the translation and the Bahasa Indonesia subtitle. 4. The researcher draws some calculation based on the result of analysis. According to Sutopo 2006:257, the analysis process in qualitative method must be done at the first together with the data collecting process. In addition, the researcher also uses quantitative method in presenting the result of the research. Quantitative method comes in form of percentage. In counting the percentage of the level of meaning accuracy and expression naturalness, Bungin‟s formula 2005:171 is used. The following formula is: n = Fx X 100 N Where, n = percentage of the type Fx = the number of the level of accuracy or naturalness N = total number of slang expressions found in the movie
