CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Research
In this era of globalization, the needs for entertainment cannot be limited by cultural, geographical, and time boundaries. After fulfilling their primary needs such
as the needs for food, clothes, and place to stay, people tend to seek for their second needs such as entertainment. According to Cambridge Advanced
Learner’s Dictionary
, entertainment is shows, films, television, or other performances or activities that entertain people, or a performance of this type.
Film combines both video and music into an audio-visual media. It can be seen in cinemas, in houses by VCDDVD or television, and in public places. There
are also many genres of film such as action, drama, horror, comedy, science-fiction, documentary, etc. People can choose film according to their preference. It is the same
as music; everyone has a different preference of film. There are people who cannot stand watching horror films and there are person who cannot be patient when
watching drama film. Film has become a massive industry that can break through the cultural and geographical boundaries. The distribution of film cannot be limited only
in a country, a nation, a race, or any kinds of invisible boundary.

Nowadays, people start to actively learn abou t other nations‟ culture. There
are some people who like to travel between countries just to learn new or unique culture of others. Another way is to study abroad. It means to learn the course that the
country is famous for, while learning the country‟s culture as well. Still, the other way is learning through internet and film. Through internet, we can search and find
almost anything we want freely as well as through watching film as long as we can understand the language.
On the other hand, language is not a static thing. It evolves as long as human being lives. There are many new words that only exist in this era such us download,
upload, etc. In Indonesia we know words such as alay, lebay, kepo, etc. Those expressions were born and exist because the speakers need to express their feeling,
but they could not find the exact expressions, so they created one. One kind of language that always has development and new meaning is slang. It is a kind of
language that belongs to a certain group. Although slang sometimes uses the daily language, the meaning can be different. It is not something new that slang also
enriches the vocabulary of a language. Nowadays, the use of slang also extends into films. There are many dialogues in film that include slang words or phrases. Slang
can also to be included into one kind of culture of a community, group, or even nation.
