2. Interview
Interview is an instrument through question and answer that is held by interacting face-to-face between the interviewer and interviewee. In this research,
the purpose of using interview was to answer research question number 1 since it was also one of the bases in designing the materials.
There are two kinds of interview according to Ary, Jacobs and Rajayieh 2002: 434. They are „structured‟ and „unstructured interview‟. In the first type,
each respondent is asked the same set of questions. While in the second type, the questions arise from the situation. In this study, the combination of these two
kinds of interviews was conducted to English teachers of grade VIII of SMP N 1 Mungkid.
The interview was to clarify four areas of questions, those were: a. Grade VIII students‟ interest in learning English
b. Students‟ reading ability c. The implementation of 2006 curriculum in SMP N 1 Mungkid especially for
English subject d. The appropriate English reading materials for grade VIII
E. Data Gathering Technique
This sub chapter explains how the researcher gathered the data for this research. As mentioned before, the researcher conducted research and collected
information before designing the materials and conducted field test after designing the materials. In conducting research and collecting information, the data were
50 gathered by using questionnaires and interviews for needs analysis as the basis to
compose the materials. The first questionnaire was distributed to grade VIII students of SMP N 1 Mungkid and the interview was conducted to English
teachers of SMP N 1 Mungkid. In conducting field-test, the researcher distributed the second questionnaire to the English teachers for evaluating the designed
materials as the basis of materials revision.
F. Data Analysis Technique
The data in this research were taken from interview and questionnaires. The data from interview were organized, interpreted and then developed as the
basis of designing the materials. To analyze the data from the questionnaires, descriptive data analysis was chosen.
In questionnaire A, the students were asked to choose certain answer of the provided options in the questionnaire. Then the data were described in
percentages in which the number of students who chose certain answer was divided by the total number of the students and then multiplied by 100. In other
words, the data were calculated by the following formula: N Note: N : the number of students who chose certain answer
X 100 ∑x : the total number of the students ∑x
The percentages gave an overview of students‟ characteristics, interests, motivation and need in learning English as the basis of designing the materials.
