1. Questionnaire
Questionnaire, as one of the tools for gathering data in this research was intended to answer both research questions number 1 and 2. Questionnaire that
was distributed in needs survey was one of the bases of designing the materials. The second questionnaire that was distributed to English teachers was aimed to
evaluate and revise the materials before presenting the materials. In this research, both types of questionnaire namely selected-response and
open-ended were used. According to Wiersma 1995: 181, the respondents selected two or more options for selected-response or forced-choice items, and
constructed a response for open-ended items. Since the answers of the questions are available on selected-response items or usually called closed form items, it
makes the respondents easy to fill in the questionnaire. On the other hand, the open-ended form items are used to get more information from the respondents
because they can answer freely. As stated above there were two kinds of questionnaire in this study.
Questionnaire A was distributed to grade VIII students for the needs analysis. Questionnaire B was distributed to English teachers for materials evaluation. The
questionnaire for the students was written in Indonesian to make them easier to understand the questions in order to give appropriate answers for the questions.
The questions in questionnaire A were aimed to find out: a. The students‟ opinion about reading in English and their reading class
b. The students‟ interest in reading in English PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
48 c. The students‟ learning styles the strategies that the students usually used
while they were reading English texts. In this questionnaire the researcher combined selected response and open
ended form items. In selected response items students were asked to choose the appropriate answers that are significant to their actual situation by circling or
crossing one or more of the provided options in the questionnaire. In open-ended items the students were allowed to add answers which were not available in the
questionnaire. For the materials evaluation, the questions were aimed to find out:
a. The respondents‟ opinion about the materials b. The respondents‟ feedback for the materials
c. The respondents‟ suggestion and recommendation for the materials In this questionnaire the researcher used both selected response items and
open-ended items. For the selected response items, the researcher used Likert scale which was one of the most widely used techniques to measure attitudes. The
researcher used Likert scale since it is useful for getting respondents‟ views, judgments, and opinions. By using this scale, the respondents were asked to
register their agreements on a scale consisting of five points as follows: 1 = if the respondent strongly disagrees with the statement
2 = if the respondent disagrees with the statement 3 = if the respondent is doubt with the statement
4 = if the respondent agrees with the statement 5 = if the respondent strongly agrees with the statement
