certain decision according to their previous agreement. When the DOH’s staff says that the judge is going out of script, it implies that
both Department of Humanity and the Judge have already made a certain agreement.
The staff’s utterances is meant to explain Darius’s reference to the agreement to make the government win the custody.
c. Claiming for Common Ground
In the first season of The Lottery TV Series, there are 4 data found as the performance of claiming for common ground. Moreover, Darius is the
only speaker who performs this sub strategy. When he performs a command, he tends to seek the common needs among the participants or to include the
hearer into the same group with him. Thus, athough the command is not in the form of bald on record, the hearer will follow him with less complaints
since they feel the same way as Darius. On the other hand, Vanessa does not perform any command by claiming for common ground. It is because bald on
record with non minimization politeness strategy is more suitable for her conditions. Finally, there are three examples provided in this sub chapter in
order to give deeper explanation. The first example is set in the DOH’s laboratory where Dr. Lennon
works. In this meeting, Darius fires Dr. Lennon from her job as the head of fertility research project. Moreover, Darius tries to convey his intention in a
very smooth way by not giving a direct command. Darius Hayes
: That won’t be necessary, Dr. Lennon. Dr. Alison Lennon : excuse?
Darius Hayes
: I appreciate your diligence, but we’ll taking the
lead from this point going forward.

When Darius performs the command, he intentionally takes Dr. Lennon’s positive face into consideration in making the utterance. He tries to
respect Dr. Lennon positive face wants by appreciating her diligence. Moreover, he realizes the command by claiming for common ground. Darius
tries to seek an agreement by including Dr. Lennon into the same group as him when he u
ses the identity markers “we”. The second example is the conversation between Darius and James
Lynch which is set in the parking area of DOH laboratory. Darius meets James to ask him some questions related to fertility research. James rejects to
answer since he knows that he has no right to give any information even to the chief of DOH himself.
Darius Hayes : I know you work hard to create more. If you succeed, you need to let me know and no one else.
James Lynch : Alison is in charge of the project. I
can’t. Darius Hayes : She is a loose cannon.

In delivering the command, Darius tries to claim a common ground by appreciating the addressee’s hard work. When he says “I know you work hard
to create more”, he shows that he wants to fulfil James’s positive face want to be recognized and respected. Darius c
ontinues his utterance by saying “If you succeed, you need to let me know and no one else”. In this utterance he asks
James to inform him any information related to the development of the research because he does not trusts Dr. Lennon.
The third example is set in the same place and context with the first example. In this conversation, Darius emphasizes
his command, which states that James has to let him know any information related to the embryos.
Darius Hayes : I just need you to let me know as soon as you do
if there are more embryos.
James Lynch : Why?
Darius Hayes : I can make sure
they’re properly protected. We all want the same thing, James.

In the third example, Darius performs the same command with the previous example. He says “I just need you to let me know as soon as you do
if there are more embryos”, James then responds him by demanding Darius to give him the reason why he should give any information related to the
research. In the next utterance, Darius softens the face threatening act by seeking the same goals between the participants. He tries to claim the
common goals by saying “We all want the same thing James”.
d. Conveying that Both Participants are Cooperators
The next sub strategy to realize positive politeness strategy is by conveying that both participants are cooperators. At this point, Vanessa
performs more utterances compared to Darius by employing 3 utterances. In contrast, Darius only performs two utterances. However, both Vanessa and
Darius use this sub strrategy for similar purposes such as to warn or to threat the hearer in smooth ways. It can be seen in datum 07_2PPPCP, Darius
tries to warn Dr. Lennon to do the better job after the government gives her the second chance as the scientist or otherwise she will be fired. Moreover, in
