most of this opportunity”, it can be categorized as a command since it tells Dr. Lennon to use the second opportunity better otherwise she will get fired
for the second time. The second example is the conversation between Vanessa and Dr.
Lennon in the fertility laboratory. Vanessa asks her to use the script that she wrote for the next speech. However, Dr. Lennon rejects it since she does not
agree with the content of the sript. Vanessa then forces her by using a command which contains a warning.
Dr. Alison Lennon : This isn’t optimism. It’s a horseshit. I have no
idea why I was able to fertilize those eggs or I’ll be able to do it again ever. So, I certainly
can’t say we’re on the verge of finding a cure.
Vanessa Keller : I respect your desire to do the right thing, but,
unfortunately, you signed anagreement. If you don’t cooperate, that deal goes away, and
charges will be filled. Dr. Alison Lennon : So you gonna charge me with a crime for not
lying?

When Vanessa says “I respect your desire to do the right thing, but unfortunately, you signed an agreement. If you don’t cooperate, that deal goes
away, and charges will be filled”, she shows that she respects Dr. Lennon’s positive face wants related to the need to be respected. Moreover, she also
threatens Dr. Lennon by saying that if she disagrees to cooperate, Vanessa will fill the charge. Thus, if they can cooperate, they will get mutual benefits.
On the other hand, if they cannot cooperate they will get mutual disadvantages.
e. Being Direct
Being direct is the only sub strategy of negative politeness that is found in the first season of The Lottery TV Series. Moreover, all the data are
performed by Vanessa with 3 utterances. Vanessa uses this sub strategy in two different contexts. The first is Vanessa expresses her command to a
White House ’s staff. In this situation, Vanessa suspects that Nathan is trying
to give some clue in the video sent by the terrorist. However, she is quite unsure about it. Thus, she asks the staff to replay the video but she still
expresses her sense of pessimism in her command. The second context explains that Vanessa performs a command to someone who does not have
clear working relationship with her. Moreover, the command is related to a personal interest. In this particular context, Vanessa uses this sub strategy in
order to respect the hearer ’s negative face. In short, there are two functions of
being direct found in The Lottery TV Series. First, it is used when the speakers doubts about the realization of her command. Second, it is used to
respect the hearer ’s negative face. More illustrations are provided in the
following examples. In this example, Vanessa performs a command by using negative
politeness strategy of being direct. The conversation is set in a formal meeting in the White House to discuss the terrorist’s demand. Vanessa
carefully watches the video that was sent by the terrorist. Then, she realizes that Nathan is trying to give them a clue by saying something quietly in the
video. Therefore she asks one of the staff to zoom in and replay the video in a slow motion.
Vanessa Keller : What’s he doing?
A staff in the White House : What do you mean?
Vanessa Keller : Nathan. Can you blow it up and
rewind the video feed? Stop, there

Vanessa softens the face threatening act by taking the addressee’s
negative face wants into her consideration before she utters a command. She uses a modal auxiliary “can” to show that she respects the addressee’s
negative face wants. Moreover, she also performs a command by using a rhetorical
question. When she says “Can you blow it up and rewind the video?” to the staff, she actually knows that the staff can do that. On the other
hand, the staff also understands that the question is not a question but a command to rewind the video.
3. Factor Influencing the Choice of Politeness Strategies
There are three factors of politeness strategies which influence the hearer to choose a certain strategy. These three factors are social distance,
relative power and ranking of imposition. In this research, all the three factors influence Vanessa and Darius
’s choice of politeness strategies in the first season of The Lottery TV series.
a. Social Distance
Vanessa is the only speaker influenced by social distance in choosing politeness strategy to perform a command with 7 data. It is because Vanessa
is more emotional than Darius. Moreover, some of Vanessa’s adressees are
people who are socially close to her and the contents of the commands are about their personal interest. On the other hand, Darius is not influenced by
social distance because his addressees are mostly people who work for him. In some contexts, Darius also performs a command to the addressee who does
not directly work for him, but the content is not about his personal issue. Furthermore, there are three examples provided to give more illustrations.
The first example is the conversation between Vanessa and Nathan. In this example, Nathan says that he wants to have a normal date with Vanessa
after he finished his jobs in Shanghai. However, Vanessa refuses it because she wants to have a personal and secret date. I
n response to Vanessa’s refusal, Nathan expresses
his disappointment by saying “Am I bad for your brand?”. Vanessa seems offended by Nathan’s utterance. She responds to the question
by giving him a command by saying “so please do not judge me on how I
build my brand”. Nathan
