The third example is set in the same place and context with the first example. In this conversation, Darius emphasizes
his command, which states that James has to let him know any information related to the embryos.
Darius Hayes : I just need you to let me know as soon as you do
if there are more embryos.
James Lynch : Why?
Darius Hayes : I can make sure
they’re properly protected. We all want the same thing, James.

In the third example, Darius performs the same command with the previous example. He says “I just need you to let me know as soon as you do
if there are more embryos”, James then responds him by demanding Darius to give him the reason why he should give any information related to the
research. In the next utterance, Darius softens the face threatening act by seeking the same goals between the participants. He tries to claim the
common goals by saying “We all want the same thing James”.
d. Conveying that Both Participants are Cooperators
The next sub strategy to realize positive politeness strategy is by conveying that both participants are cooperators. At this point, Vanessa
performs more utterances compared to Darius by employing 3 utterances. In contrast, Darius only performs two utterances. However, both Vanessa and
Darius use this sub strrategy for similar purposes such as to warn or to threat the hearer in smooth ways. It can be seen in datum 07_2PPPCP, Darius
tries to warn Dr. Lennon to do the better job after the government gives her the second chance as the scientist or otherwise she will be fired. Moreover, in
datum

Vanessa tries to warn Dr. Lennon that the agreement
will be dropped if Dr. Lennon rejects to follow the order. Furthermore, this sub strategy is not only used to warn or to threat the hearer but also used to
show that both participants will get some advantages if the hearer agrees to follow the order. More illustration is given in the following examples.
In the first example

Darius performs a command to Dr. Lennon after the government gave her a second chance as scientist in the DOH. In the
previous meeting, Darius fired Dr. Lennon because he believes that she cannot be controlled. However, Vanessa who is responsible for the lottery
needs Dr. Lennon to be the scientific face of the lottery since she is the one who fertilized the embryos. In response to the situation, Vanessa uses her
power to makes Dr. Lennon works for DOH for the second time although Darius does not agree with it.
Darius Hayes : Just so you k
now, Dr. Lennon, I didn’t agree with this decision, having said that, I believe in second
chances, so please make the most of this opportunity.
Dr. Alison Lennon : Silent Vanessa Hayes
: Don’t worry about him, stay focus, do your job.

In this opportunity, Darius performs a command by conveying that the participants are cooperator. In his first utterance, he attacks Dr. Lennon
’s face by saying that he does not agree with the decision. However, in the next
utterance, he softens the damage from the first utterance by saying “having
said that, I believe in second chances”. Finally, he closes the conversation by
giving a command. He tries to convey that they can get mutual benefits if Dr. Lennon agrees to cooperate
with him. When he says “So please make the
most of this opportunity”, it can be categorized as a command since it tells Dr. Lennon to use the second opportunity better otherwise she will get fired
for the second time. The second example is the conversation between Vanessa and Dr.
Lennon in the fertility laboratory. Vanessa asks her to use the script that she wrote for the next speech. However, Dr. Lennon rejects it since she does not
agree with the content of the sript. Vanessa then forces her by using a command which contains a warning.
Dr. Alison Lennon : This isn’t optimism. It’s a horseshit. I have no
idea why I was able to fertilize those eggs or I’ll be able to do it again ever. So, I certainly
can’t say we’re on the verge of finding a cure.
Vanessa Keller : I respect your desire to do the right thing, but,
unfortunately, you signed anagreement. If you don’t cooperate, that deal goes away, and
charges will be filled. Dr. Alison Lennon : So you gonna charge me with a crime for not
lying?

When Vanessa says “I respect your desire to do the right thing, but unfortunately, you signed an agreement. If you don’t cooperate, that deal goes
away, and charges will be filled”, she shows that she respects Dr. Lennon’s positive face wants related to the need to be respected. Moreover, she also
threatens Dr. Lennon by saying that if she disagrees to cooperate, Vanessa will fill the charge. Thus, if they can cooperate, they will get mutual benefits.
On the other hand, if they cannot cooperate they will get mutual disadvantages.
