common ground with 4 data. By realizing his utterance in the form of claiming for common ground, he tries to seek for an agreement and
common goal with the addressee. Thus, he can redress the face damage on the addressee when he performs a command. Moreover, the addressee
tends to follow his order with no complaint since they believe that they have the same goal with Darius.
3. The third objective is to reveal the factors which initiate Vanessa Keller
and Darius Hayes to perform certain types of politeness strategies in performing speech act of commands in the first season of The Lottery TV
Series. The most dominant factor which influences the speakers to use a certain politeness strategy in making a command is the relative power with
21 data. Vanessa performs 12 utterances and Darius performs the other 9 utterances. This factor becomes dominant for two reasons. First, when
Vanessa and Darius perform a command, their addressees are mostly those who work for them, therefore, they can use their power to perform speech
acts of command without being afraid of non cooperative action from the addressees. Second, the speakers want to show their power over the
addressees in orde to make them follow the order. Finally, the least factor to occur is the ranking of imposition with only two data. Both Vanessa and
Darius perform one of them. This factor can only be found when the speakers perform a command to someone who has no hierarchical working
relationship with them but they do respect the addressees.
B. Suggestions
After conducting the research, the researcher propposed some suggestion for the following parties.
1. To the Students of English and Literature Study Program
Pragmatics covers various phenomena of language in use, including the phenomena of politeness. The phenomena of politeness already gained much
attention from many researchers. However, it is still worth to be investigated since the phenomena of politeness can be related to various linguistic fields
such as pragmatics and sociolingiustics. Thus, the researcher suggests that the students of English and Literature Study Program, especially those who are
majoring in linguistics, conduct more research on politeness. Moreover, they can use this research as a reference to enrich their knowledge and
understanding on politeness phenomena, especially in relation to politeness strategies and speech acts of command.
2. To Other Researchers
This research focuses on three objectives: identifying the types of politeness strategies of command, describing the realizations of politeness
strategies of command and revealing the factors influencing the choice of politeness strategies in The Lottery TV Series. Meanwhile, there are more
problems that can be investigated by other researchers who are interested to conduct research under the issue of politeness such as the functions of
politeness strategies and the response of the addressee toward a certain
strategy. The researcher also suggests that other researchers use other sources of data such as novels, movies, or political speeches.
