Vanessa and George have already known each other for a long time and they are socially close. Although they have intimate relationship, it seems that
the degree of imposition influences him to choose the strategy greater than the other two factors. In this context, Vanessa does not act as the
representative of the president or the country but she represents herself. Moreover, the issue that they are disscussing is not only their personal
problems, but also about their doubt on the government. Thus, it can be concluded that degree of imposition is the factor which influences her to
perform negative politeness strategy. In conclusion, both Vanessa and Darius perform a certain politeness
strategy based on their situation and their specific needs. Vanesessa mostly commands by using bald on record with non minimization politeness
strategy. More importantly, she uses this strategy for three purposes. First, it is used to warn the hearer. Second, it is used to threat the hearer. The last
purpose is to avoid ambiguity. On the other hand, Darius mostly performs his commands by using positive politeness strategy in the form of claiming for
common ground. He uses this strategy in order to convince the hearer that they belong to the same group and they have the same goal. Thus, by
performing negative politeness to claim for common ground, Darius gets less complaint from his addressees.
Finally, the most influential factor which influences the speakers to choose the politeness strategies is the relative power. Both Vanessa and
Darius are influenced by this strategy for one reason. It is triggered by their intention to show their power over the addressee. Thus, although they
perform commands with an attempt to reduce the face threat such as through off record and positive politeness, their utterances are showing that they have
more power compared to the addressee.

CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
This chapter consists of two sub chapters, conclusions and suggestions. The three points stated in the conclusions are derived from the research
findings which are related to the objectives of the research. Meanwhile, the sub chapter of suggestions provides some suggestions to some parties in
relation to the result of the research.
A. Conclusions
Based on the findings and disussion in the previous chapter, the conclusions are presented as follows.
1. The first objective of the research is to identify the types of politeness
strategies of command performed by Vanessa Keller and Darius Hayes in the first season of The Lottery TV Series. The research reveals 30 data.
Vanessa performs 20 utterances and Darius performs the other 10. Based on the findings, all four types of Brown and Levinson
’s politeness strategy occur in the first season of The Lottery TV Series. The types of politeness
strategy are bald on record, off record, positive politeness and negative politeness. However, the frequency of occurrence for each type of
politeness strategies is different. Bald on record politeness strategy becomes the most frequent strategy to occur with 14 out of 30 data. The 11
data of this strategy are performed by Vanessa and the other 3 are perfomed by Darius. It is because both speakers get more advantages from
the directness of bald on record politeness strategy. Furthermore, Vanessa and Darius perform this strategy to different addressee and in different
circumstances. Vanessa performs bald on record to her friends, family, and her working colleagues or employees. She also uses bald on record in both
formal and non formal situations. In contrast, Darius only performs bald on record to his employees with a formal topic or in a formal
circumstance. Finally, the least strategy to occur is negative politeness with only 3 data and all of them are performed by Vanessa. This strategy is
rarely used by the characters because the speakers need to be clear and unambiguous in making a command to prevent multiple interpretations.
2. The second objective is to describe the realization of politeness strategies
used by Vanessa Keller and Darius Hayes to perform speech acts of commands in the first season of The Lottery TV Series. Based on the
politeness theory proposed by Brown and Levinson, politeness strategy can be realized in 9 ways. However, there are only 5 realizations found in
this research. They are non minimization, inviting conversational implicature, claiming for common ground, conveying that both
participants are cooperators, and being direct. Vanessa mostly realizes her utterances with non minimization politeness strategy by 11 utterances out
of 14 data. Since non minimization is the only way to realize bald on record politeness strategy, therefore, it is performed in the same situation
for the same purpose as bald on record politeness. On the other hand, Darius mostly performs his utterances of command by claiming for
common ground with 4 data. By realizing his utterance in the form of claiming for common ground, he tries to seek for an agreement and
common goal with the addressee. Thus, he can redress the face damage on the addressee when he performs a command. Moreover, the addressee
tends to follow his order with no complaint since they believe that they have the same goal with Darius.
3. The third objective is to reveal the factors which initiate Vanessa Keller
and Darius Hayes to perform certain types of politeness strategies in performing speech act of commands in the first season of The Lottery TV
Series. The most dominant factor which influences the speakers to use a certain politeness strategy in making a command is the relative power with
21 data. Vanessa performs 12 utterances and Darius performs the other 9 utterances. This factor becomes dominant for two reasons. First, when
Vanessa and Darius perform a command, their addressees are mostly those who work for them, therefore, they can use their power to perform speech
acts of command without being afraid of non cooperative action from the addressees. Second, the speakers want to show their power over the
addressees in orde to make them follow the order. Finally, the least factor to occur is the ranking of imposition with only two data. Both Vanessa and
Darius perform one of them. This factor can only be found when the speakers perform a command to someone who has no hierarchical working
relationship with them but they do respect the addressees.
