The Morgan Family as the Ruling Class Family

The first case is the case of K.D and Arnette. There is a conflict between the Morgans and the Fleetwood since K.D does something bad to Arnette; he slaps Arnette. Moreover, Arnette is pregnant. The pregnancy is not the main problem but the main problem is the slapping Morrison 54. The main thing in this case is that pregnancy without legal married is banned. Arnette is pregnant before she has got married with K.D. Since the Morgan family is the upper class family, legal marriage is an accepted form, and illegitimacy and desertion are not condoned Myrdal 701-702. In the contrary, Bellie Delia gets bad treatment although she does not broke the rule. She has to leave Ruby. Although it was Arnette who had sex at fourteen with the groom, Billie Delia carried the burden. She quickly learned the cantionary look in the eyes of girls whose mothers had warned them away from Bellie Delia. In fact she was untouched Morrison 151. This situation really makes Patricia Best, Billie Delia ‟s mother, sad. Yet, she can do nothing about this case. Patricia Best realizes that her daughter is treated in an unfair way. Educated but self-taught also to make sure that everybody knew that the bastard-born daughter of the woman with sunlight skin and no last name was not only lovely but of great worth and inestimable value. Trying to understand how she could have picked up that pressing iron, Pat realized that ever since Billie Delia was an infant, she thought of her as a liability somehow. Vulnerable to the possibility of not being quite as much of a lady as Patricia Cato would like. Was it that business of pulling down her panties in the street? Billie Delia was only three then. Pat knew that had her daughter been an 8-rock, they would not have held it against her. They would have seen it for what it was – only and innocent child would have done that, surely. Have missed something?..defended Billie Delia or sacrificed her Morrison 203. On the other side, K.D. thinks that the protection of the Morgan family is just for the sake of Morgan‟s name. He realizes that he is the only child who will continue the family name of Morgan. Moreover, he is the heir of the Morgans‟ wealth. Saving K.D. means saving the Morgans‟ money. However disgusted both were, K.D. knew they would not negotiate a solution that would endanger him or the future of Morgan money. His grandfather had named his twins Deacon and Steward for a reason. And their family had not built two towns, fought white law, Colored Creek, bandits and bad weather, to see ranches and houses and a bank with mortgages on a feed store, a drugstore and a furniture store end up in Arnold Fleetwood‟s pocket. Since the loose bones of his cousins had been buried two years ago, K.D., their hope and their despair, was the last male in a line that included a lieutenant governor, a state auditor and two mavors. His behavior, as always, required scrutiny and serious correction. Or would the uncles see it another way? Maybe Arnette‟s baby would be a boy, a Morgan grandnephew. Would her father, Arnold have any rights then that the Morgans had to respect? Morrison 55 As what Gunnar Myrdal wrote, the other characteristic of black upper class is that family background is stressed in this class. The family is organized upon the paternalistic principle Myrdal 701-702. This is the reason why the twins defend K.D. against Fleetwoods. The second case is the case of K.D and Gigi. It is not really clearly written in the story related to the affair between K.D. and Gigi. Yet, some statements explain this situation. The first statement rises when several people discuss K.D and Arnette case. His uncles Deek and Steward, Reverend Misner, Arnette‟s father and brother. They would discuss the slapping but not the pregnancy and certainly not the girl with sapphires hidden in her shoes Morrison 54. “The girl with sapphires hidden in her shoes” must be someone who has a tight relation with K.D. and it refers to Gigi. In the other part, there is statement from Gigi who strengthen this evidence. “That stupid, fucked-up town make anybody puke. I can‟t believe that‟s what they call a party. Hymns, for crying out loud” Gigi laughed. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI “It was a wedding party, not a disco.” Mavis wiped the perspiration forming under her neck. “Besides, you just wanted to see you love pony again.” “That asshole?” “Yeah. Him.” Mavis smiled. “Now he‟s married, you want him back.” “If I want him back I can get him back. What I want is to leave this fucking place.” “You‟ve been saying that for four years – right, Sen?” Gigi opened her mouth, then paused. Was it four? She thought two. But at least two were spent fooling around with K.D. the prick Morrison 165. Gigi is a woman from the Convent. She is a vagabond. Most of the Convent women have faced bad experiences in their life. It also happens to Gigi. Women from the Convent belong to the lower class. It is implicitly shown from her behavior. Only when she slammed the Cadillac door did the person sit up and push back the hat. Calling out, “Connie Connie?” Mavis hurried toward the garden‟s edge. “Who the hell are you? Where‟s Connie?” The naked girl yawned and scratched her pubic hair. “Mavis?” she asked… “You put some clothes on” “You kiss my ass Morrison 76” Thus having relation with the lower class also broke the rule of the upper class people. Gunnar Myrdal wrote that children from the upper class family are shielded as far as possible both from influences of the lower class Negroes Myrdal 702. What K.D is doing by having relationship with Gigi is not condoned. The third case is the case of Deacon Morgan and Consolata or Connie. Deacon Morgan as the “guard” of Ruby also has an affair with the Convent woman. He has an affair with Consolata or Connie; the leader of the Convent. It is just the same case with what happen to Gigi and K.D. Although it is an old story of Deacon Morgan, at least he ever breaks the rule of Ruby. Steward Morgan and Soane Morgan Deacon‟s wife also know about this case. Implicitly, it can be the
