Ruby as an “Oligarchical” Community

The generation had to be not only racially untampered with but free of adultery too. “God bless the pure and holy” indeed. … It wasn‟t Good‟s brow to be feared. It was his own, their own. Is that why “Be the Furrow of His Brow” drove them crazy? But the bargain must have been broken or changed, because there were only seven now. By whom? The Morgans, probably. They ran everythi ng, controlled everything. …. In that case, she thought, everything that worries them must come from women. DEAR GOD, SHE MURMURED. DEAR, DEAR GOD. I BURNED THE PAPERS Morrison 217. Patricia Best thinks that she cannot do something since the Morgan family is the ruling family in Ruby. When she publishes that information to the public, she is afraid that something bad will happen to her family. Billie Delia case has already broken her heart.

3. Power and Status Relations of the Morgan Family

The role of power in a society becomes one of the main thing in status relation and how the community will be built. Maintaining power in a society is a must but need consequences in practice. Power is needed in maintaining the management of a community in order to bring this community into a better future. But, an unmanageable or uncontrollable power will lead into great destruction of a community. Dye proposes seven statements related to the nature of power Dye 4. The fourth statement says that power is never e qually distributed. “Power holder” must control some values in hisher society in order to get hisher influence. This situation urge for one domination. By controlling the values, the power holder is in a position to offer these values as rewards to others or to threaten to deprive others of these values. There is no power if power is equal. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI The Morgan family as the richest family and also the ruling class in Ruby strengthens their power over Ruby. Having the power within Ruby cannot be separated from the role of other members of Ruby. It is exactly the same as what sociologist C. Wright Mills observed: “No one can be truly powerful unless he has access to the command of major institutions, for it is over these institutional means of power that the truly powerful are, in the first instance, powerful.” There are members of Ruby who support the Morgans. The Morgans also have access through the Oven. The Oven is the top of Ruby institution since the church has a big role in Afro American community. The Church is still the only institution which provides an effective organization of the group, an approved and tolerated place for social activities, a forum for expression on many issues, an outlet for emotional repressions, and a plan for expression on many issues, an outlet for emotional repressions, and a plan for social living Myrdal 867. Since the Morgans have an access through the institution of Ruby, they become the most influential family in Ruby. This situation clearly stated the distribution of power and of course, the power belongs to the Morgans.

a. The Morgan Family ’s Domination

The twins, Deacon Morgan and Steward Morgan as the family members of the Morgans, dominate most of the decision made by Ruby. Actually there are a lot of cases related to the Morgans but because of their domination all that cases are buried safely. The climax happens when there is a massacre in the Convent lead by the twins. At least, there are four cases related to the Morgans. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI The first case is the case of K.D and Arnette. There is a conflict between the Morgans and the Fleetwood since K.D does something bad to Arnette; he slaps Arnette. Moreover, Arnette is pregnant. The pregnancy is not the main problem but the main problem is the slapping Morrison 54. The main thing in this case is that pregnancy without legal married is banned. Arnette is pregnant before she has got married with K.D. Since the Morgan family is the upper class family, legal marriage is an accepted form, and illegitimacy and desertion are not condoned Myrdal 701-702. In the contrary, Bellie Delia gets bad treatment although she does not broke the rule. She has to leave Ruby. Although it was Arnette who had sex at fourteen with the groom, Billie Delia carried the burden. She quickly learned the cantionary look in the eyes of girls whose mothers had warned them away from Bellie Delia. In fact she was untouched Morrison 151. This situation really makes Patricia Best, Billie Delia ‟s mother, sad. Yet, she can do nothing about this case. Patricia Best realizes that her daughter is treated in an unfair way. Educated but self-taught also to make sure that everybody knew that the bastard-born daughter of the woman with sunlight skin and no last name was not only lovely but of great worth and inestimable value. Trying to understand how she could have picked up that pressing iron, Pat realized that ever since Billie Delia was an infant, she thought of her as a liability somehow. Vulnerable to the possibility of not being quite as much of a lady as Patricia Cato would like. Was it that business of pulling down her panties in the street? Billie Delia was only three then. Pat knew that had her daughter been an 8-rock, they would not have held it against her. They would have seen it for what it was – only and innocent child would have done that, surely. Have missed something?..defended Billie Delia or sacrificed her Morrison 203. On the other side, K.D. thinks that the protection of the Morgan family is just for the sake of Morgan‟s name. He realizes that he is the only child who will
