The Hierarchical System of the Afro American Church

Democracy is safer and more permanent than oligarchies, because they have a middle class which dominates and has a greater share in the government; for when there is no middle class, and the poor greatly exceeds in number, troubles arise, and the state soon comes to an end Aristotle 2. Ruby as a community seems to adopt the system of Oligarchical rather than Democracy. Only several people of Ruby community become the decision maker. Only some people dominate and rule Ruby. Most of them are the rich ones. They have that opportunity mostly because they are rich or act like they are rich. Mis ner knew that Puliam‟s words were a widening of the war he had declared on Misner‟s activities: tempting the young to step outside the wall, outside the town limits, shepherding them, forcing them to transgress, to think of themselves as civil warriors. He know also that a public secret about a never-born baby poked through the grounds of the quarrel like a fang Morrison 144. As written by Gunnar Myrdal, the Church has been, and continues to be, the outstanding social institution in the Negro community. It has a far wider function than to bring spiritual inspiration to its communicants. It is a social center, it is a club, it is an area for the exercise of one‟s capabilities and powers, a world in which one may achieve self-realization and preferment Myrdal 867. This statement shows that being a Morgan family partner will give someone a high position within Ruby and as a reverend it will be “profitable” since Reverend Senior Puliam is the leader of Methodist Church. The Methodists, early on, has smiled at the dissension among the Baptists. The Pentecostals laughs out loud. But not for long. It was true that Jeff had taken to carrying a handgun; that Steward Morgan and Arnold Fleetwood had shouted at each other in the street… Morrison 149. Oligarchical system dominates Ruby community. Defending this system will ruin Ruby community. The climax begins when several people try to get rid of the Convent women since the women threat the existence of the Morgan family domination and the system of Ruby which legally support Oligarchical system.

c. The Morgan Family as the Ruling Class Family

The Morgan family has the money for Ruby so that Ruby can exist. Moreover, they do not beg for help from the State. Two characters who do not like this situation are Richard Misner and Anna Flood. She was watching Deek‟s sedan circle the Oven and then cruise slowly past her stone. “Why does he have to hover like that?” Richard Misner looked up from the woodstove. “He‟s just checking on things,” he said, PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
