21 CHAPTER IV RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND FINDINGS This chapter presents about A Research Methodology which consists of the aims of study, the place and time of study, the subjuct and the object of study, the technique of collecting data, and technique of data analysis.B Research Finding which consists of data description, the analysis of data, and the interpretation of data.

I. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A. The Aim of Study

The aim of this research is to know how to improve students’ vocabulary by using picture at VII grade of Junior High School Pontang 1 Serang Banten. The writer hopes it will give a pleasant and also interesting activity for students, so it will motivate them to enlarge their range of vocabulary.

B. The Place and Time of Study

This research took place at Junior High School Pontang 1 that is located on Jl. Ciptayasa Serang Banten. The writer conducted this research for one month and two weeks. It began from December 2, 2010.

C. The Subject and the Object of Study

1. The Subject of the study The subject of this study is students at grade VII of Junior High School Pontang 1 Serang Banten academic year 2010-2011. There are 36 students in VII grade. It is chosen based upon the unstructured interview result with the English teacher at that class proving that they have the lowest achievement of vocabulary test among the other classes. For that reason they need an appropriate strategy to help them improve their scores on vocabulary. 2. The Object of the Study The object of this study is using pictures to improve students’ understanding in learning vocabulary.

D. Technique of Collecting Data

There are three techniques of data collecting applied in this study; they are observation, interview, and test in order to support the data of teaching and learning process. 1. Observation Observation meant in this research is investigating activity to see how far the effect of the action to reach the goal. 1 The observation in this research is to observe by eye observation. It was used to collect the data to find out how good the teacher’s performance, class situation, and also student’s response to or concerning the use of pictures during teaching learning activity. The result of this observation is the teacher tended to dominated in the class. There was no opportunity for students to be active in the class. The teachers alway asked the students to open the dictionary when the students did not understand what the words meaning. And then, the students could not felt interest in teaching learning process. 2. Interview Interview is a way of the communication between the interviewer and interviewee. The writer interviewed the English teacher and the students of VII grade of SMPN 1 Pontang Serang- Banten. The writer asks the teacher about the general condition of English teaching learning activity, students’ difficulty in vocabulary, and the strategy usually used by the teacher in teaching vocabulary. The interview also will be carried out after implementing CAR to know the teacher and student’s response toward the picture. The result of interview is some students enthusiastic in English lesson. But most of students did not like English. They thought English is complicated lesson. And the students got less practice in remembering various words. 3. Test The test is used to know students’ vocabulary achievements before conducting the research and after conducting the research.
