CHAPTER III SCHOOL PROFILE
A. Description of the School
SMP 1 Negeri Pontang is lokated on Ciptayasa street, Pontang and Serang- Banten. It was built on land which is about 18.154 m
2
wide. The school has 21 classroom, teacher room, principal room, and library such as Computer Lab,
Biology Lab, and other supporting facilities. The school has three English teachers who graduated from the famous
university in Serang. The bellow table will explain their qualifications:

Although they graduated from different university and have different experience of teaching, they have the same vision of teaching English in SMP 1
Negeri Pontang is make the students to be able to communicate using English in spoken or writen, and of course to help them get standard graduated score or
„SKL‟ which determined bythe government. This school has used “KTSP” Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan,
however the application of “KTSP” is not extremely perfect, but the teachers and other elements of the school are trying to apply the true “KTSP”. Because the
syllabusis arranged by the teachers, so the method used in the school depend on the teacher and
depend of the student‟s need. It has subject hours for all subject include “muatan lokal”, and have special
course pendalaman materi for third social. There are 642 students for academic year 20102011 that divided into three
grades. First grade consist of 193 students, second grade consist of 225 students, and third grade consists of 224 students.
B. Curriculum
SMP 1 Negeri Pontang has already applied “KTSP” which focused on student‟s acquiring of communication ways used by people of target language.
Actu ally, the basic of “KTSP” is a curriculum regarded.
The English language as a tool of communication, which expressing information, ideas, feeling, and developing knowledge of science, technology, and
cultures. Thus a communication competene that students should master to get the purpose of communication. The communicative competence is discourse
competence which is to understand and to realize either spoken or written information texts into the language skills, listening, speaking, reading, and
writing. “KTSP”is only one curriculum that give stakcholders of education more right
to develop their syllabus, method, and material of teaching learning based on their students‟ need and the environment. However they cannot develop the component
of teaching learning as they want. It should based on standard competence and based competence arranged by government.
C. English Text Book
English text book which used by the English teacher in first year class of SMP 1 Negeri Pontang Serang-Banten in the english text book published by
Erlangga. The title is „English on Sky‟. This book is written by Mukarto, Sujatmiko, Josephine S.M, and Widya Kiswara. The title of second English text
book is „Smart Step‟, which written by Ali Akhmadi and Ida Safrida and published by Ganesa exact.
D. English Teaching and Learning Process
In teaching English, the English teacher used traditional technique. The teaching learning process began with socializing and the teacher greeted the
students. Next she read attendance list by calling the student‟s name one by one, then she opend the lesson.
The presentation began with the teacher‟s explanation about the topic and the strategies how to explain the characteristics of the pictures. Then presentation the
characteristics of the pictures as the essenceof teaching learning process. The explanation took about twenty minutes. However, when the teacher had been
explained the characteristics of pictures, the students seemed loose their attention. Some of them talked toeach other.
In skill practice, the students‟activities covered with answering the questions,
discussing, and making conclusion. In the end of the lesson, the teacher suggested the students to study harder. The teacher also gave them some assignments which
have to do at home. And finally she closed the lesson.
E. The Evaluation Carried Out by the Teacher
Evaluation is a way toknow how far student‟s comprehension about material, when the teacher gives taks to the students. The teacher should give clear
instruction, because instruction will direct toward conscious learning of language rules.
The evaluation which is gives by the teacher of SMP 1 Negeri Pontang Serang-Banten is more on the writing skill may be on structural or grammatical
exercise. The form of exercise such as filling in the blanks, which is the students are given a seriesof sentences with words missing.they fill in the blanks with new
vocabulary items of a particular grammar type. Then in order to show that the students undestand the meaning and use of new vocabulary items, they make up
sentences or paragraph in which they use the new word.
