D. English Teaching and Learning Process

In teaching English, the English teacher used traditional technique. The teaching learning process began with socializing and the teacher greeted the students. Next she read attendance list by calling the student‟s name one by one, then she opend the lesson. The presentation began with the teacher‟s explanation about the topic and the strategies how to explain the characteristics of the pictures. Then presentation the characteristics of the pictures as the essenceof teaching learning process. The explanation took about twenty minutes. However, when the teacher had been explained the characteristics of pictures, the students seemed loose their attention. Some of them talked toeach other. In skill practice, the students‟activities covered with answering the questions, discussing, and making conclusion. In the end of the lesson, the teacher suggested the students to study harder. The teacher also gave them some assignments which have to do at home. And finally she closed the lesson.

E. The Evaluation Carried Out by the Teacher

Evaluation is a way toknow how far student‟s comprehension about material, when the teacher gives taks to the students. The teacher should give clear instruction, because instruction will direct toward conscious learning of language rules. The evaluation which is gives by the teacher of SMP 1 Negeri Pontang Serang-Banten is more on the writing skill may be on structural or grammatical exercise. The form of exercise such as filling in the blanks, which is the students are given a seriesof sentences with words missing.they fill in the blanks with new vocabulary items of a particular grammar type. Then in order to show that the students undestand the meaning and use of new vocabulary items, they make up sentences or paragraph in which they use the new word. 21 CHAPTER IV RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND FINDINGS This chapter presents about A Research Methodology which consists of the aims of study, the place and time of study, the subjuct and the object of study, the technique of collecting data, and technique of data analysis.B Research Finding which consists of data description, the analysis of data, and the interpretation of data.

I. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A. The Aim of Study

The aim of this research is to know how to improve students’ vocabulary by using picture at VII grade of Junior High School Pontang 1 Serang Banten. The writer hopes it will give a pleasant and also interesting activity for students, so it will motivate them to enlarge their range of vocabulary.

B. The Place and Time of Study

This research took place at Junior High School Pontang 1 that is located on Jl. Ciptayasa Serang Banten. The writer conducted this research for one month and two weeks. It began from December 2, 2010.

C. The Subject and the Object of Study

1. The Subject of the study The subject of this study is students at grade VII of Junior High School Pontang 1 Serang Banten academic year 2010-2011. There are 36 students in VII grade. It is chosen based upon the unstructured interview result with the English teacher at that class proving that they have the lowest achievement of vocabulary test among the other classes. For that reason they need an appropriate strategy to help them improve their scores on vocabulary. 2. The Object of the Study The object of this study is using pictures to improve students’ understanding in learning vocabulary.
