John was trapped because he found some hint where Jane was, but Jane already knew that he was coming, prepared the trap and got him. She asked John to leave the town forcefully and directly, but he did not want it. Therefore, Jane threatened him by saying the real situation where he was. They were having a conversation through the microphone and camera inside the elevator . Jane‟s utterances were considered as assertive because Jane talked forcefully, directly, and authoritatively manner toward her team members . Jane‟s utterances were absolute and she did not accept any objection. Dialogue 20 Jane : You really expect me to roll over and play dead? John : Should be used to it after five years. Jane : Six. And I’m not leaving. This conversation happened between Jane and John in Jane‟s office. John told Jane forcefully to leave the town, but she did not want to. After that, both of them tried to kill each other by shooting and beating. In the end, both of them had the same opportunity to take the gun and shot each other, but John lowered his gun and said that he cannot do that. Jane looked at John and forbade him to lower his gun, but he did not follow the command. She used some expressions of assertive to forbid him and to persuade him forcefully to follow what she said. Dialogue 22 Jane : Why do I get the girl gun? John : Are you kidding me? Jane : No. This conversation happened in the basement of the Smith‟s house. Jane and John were being chased by the assassin and they aimed to the basement because John stored some guns there. John gave her a handgun that made her annoyed. She used her authoritative tone to ask him to change her gun. She felt like she was being underestimated by her husband. She thought that her power was as strong as her husband and the gun made her look weak and vulnerable. Her utterance was considered as assertive because Jane‟s utterances were absolute and directive that she did not want to use the gun given. Dialogue 23 John : Who was that kindly fellow who gave you away at our wedding? Jane : Paid actor. John : I said, I said I saw your dad on Fantasy Island. Jane : I know. 53 John : You know I do n‟t even want to talk about it. This conversation happened between Jane and John while they were running from the assassins that chased them. They were redoing their conversation that they had ever done because they were lying to each other. John asked Jane about the man who pretended to be her father in their wedding. He discovered the fact that the man was a paid actor and became annoyed because Jane did not feel guilty at all when John told her he met the guy on Fantasy Island. Her utterances were included as assertive because she talked in an assertive manner. Although the topic was a sensitive topic, she replied her husband directly and briefly. She did not show any sign to give an excuse or apologize although she was the one at fault, because she would look pitiful when she did that. Dialogue 24 John : I can‟t go left. See? There is no left. Look. I have straight, or back the way I came. There‟s no left. Which way do you want? Jane : Just stay there and wait for my mark. John : See what I‟m sitting in? You see that? What are you doing? This conversation happened when John was going to kidnap their target. Jane gave him some commands, but he did not follow the command because she gave wrong instruction that is caused by the wrong map. After realizing her mistake, she ordered John to stay and to wait for her until she found the right map. John decided that he would do that alone because he could not wait any longer in the puddle. Jane, who was searching the map while talking to John, did not pay serious attention about John ‟s nag. Jane : Shut up This conversation happened after they kidnaped Benjamin Danz. They were on the way to their hideout. Jane and John were fighting because John did not perform the procedure as what they had planned. While they were arguing, Benjamin woke up and talked. Jane, who was angry told him to keep silent . Jane‟s utterance was included in the assertive feature because she answered Benjamin in assertive way that was forceful and authoritative.

2. Instrumentality

This feature is expressed through problem solving effort that focus on getting information, discovering facts and suggesting solutions. Dialogue 26 John : Yeah, peas. Yeah, it‟s the green. Sweetheart, will you pass the salt? Jane : It’s in the middle of the table. John : Is that the middle of the table? Jane : Yeah, it’s between you and me. This conversation happened when Jane and John were having dinner. John asked Jane to pass the salt, which happened to be placed in the middle of the table. She responded to his question by answering where the salt was. John asked “Is that the middle of the table?” to give Jane a clue that he wanted her to take the salt 55 and give it to him, but she answered his question by saying “Yeah, it‟s between you and me.” Jane‟s last answer discovered the fact that the gap between „the salt and Jane‟ and the „salt and John‟ were the same and she did not want to take the salt. At the same time, she also gave him solution to take the salt by himself. Dialogue 27 Jane : I told you not to bother me at the office, honey. John : Well, you are still Mrs. Smith. Jane : Well, so are a lot of girls. This conversation happened between Jane and John in Jane‟s office. He came to Jane‟s office while Jane‟s team was trying to find his whereabouts. Jane, who realized that John sneaked in her office, put him on the phone. Her utterance “Well, so are a lot of girls” was considered as instrumentality because she did not use her feeling and at the same time, she discovered the fact that beside her, there were a lot of girls besides her that had the title Mrs. Smith. This conversation happened when John was trapped inside the elevator. Jane and John were having a conversation through the microphone and camera inside the elevator. This time, she threatened John to leave the town. He also refused the idea, but she already had a plan. She threatened John with the bomb that already set in the cable above the elevator. Her utterance “Did you also get the base charge on the principle cable? Promise to leave town, or I‟ll blow it” was considered as instrumentality because her intention of having the conversation 56 was to discover the fact and suggesting the best solution for both of them. She did not allow her emotion and feeling in the conversation. The conversation was purely the conversation between enemies from different companies. Dialogue 29 Jane : I thought... This conversation happened when Jane and John were racing against each other toward their home. Jane was asked about her feeling when both of them met. Her aim why she talked with John that way was to avoiding self- disclosure. Self-disclosure would make her look miserable. Jane also ignored her feeling that was included as instrumentality feature. Dialogue 30 Jane : That vacation in Aspen? You left early. Why? John : Jean-Luc Gaspard. This conversation happened after they were fighting in their house. They were talking about their jobs and found out that they almost met back then. This conversation was considered as instrumentality because she asked John and she wanted to get more information about them back then. Dialogue 31 John : I want a divorce. 57 Jane : I like it. You proposed to me here, so it has agreeable symmetry. This conversation happened in ballroom hotel. Jane asked John what her husband wanted. John, who was angry because he was almost being killed, said that he wanted a divorce. She responded to his statement coldly that she liked the fact that he asked for a divorce in the same place her husband proposed her. Her utterances were considered as self-disclosure because by saying so, she wanted to hide her true feeling and she did not want to look miserable in front of her husband. The utterance discovers the fact that he asked her to marry him there and it was a pleasant place for asking divorce in the same place. Dialogue 32 John : I have a theory. Newly formed. Jane : I’m breathless to hear it. John : You killed us. Jane : Provocative. This conversation happened in the ballroom hotel while Jane and John were dancing. Both of them were having a conversation about their marriage. John told Jane his thought about their marriage, but she responded her husband coldly. Her utterances were included as instrumentality because she only said some words that were the fact and she hid her feeling when she said that. Her goal was to show her husband that she did not care about their marriage and she did not involve her feeling when she said that. Dialogue 33 John : We promised the Colemans. Jane : I know. John : OK. 58 Jane : I’ll be there. In and out. Just a quickie. This conversation happened in the Smith‟s house. At that time, Jane was getting ready to go out to do her job. John reminded Jane that they had promised with the Colemans. She answered „I know‟ to let him know that she knew it and still remember the promise. The utterance “I‟ll be there. In and out. Just a quickie.” meant she was giving him the solution to their problem. Dialogue 34 Jane : You know me. I never do anything without thinking it through. Jasmine : What does he do? Jane : He’s in construction. He is a big-time contractor. He’s gone as much as I am, so it’s perfect. This conversation happened when Jane and Jasmine were doing rock- climbing. Jane told her best friend that she was going to marry soon. Jane‟s utterances were included in instrumentality feature because their conversation omitted Jane‟s feeling. Although the conversation happened between friends, and it was a heart-warming topic, but the conversation was focused on discovering facts and getting information about John. There was no special feeling involved.

3. Status and Control
