This conversation happened in the Smith‟s house. At that time, Jane was getting ready to go out to do her job. John reminded Jane that they had promised
with the Colemans. She answered „I know‟ to let him know that she knew it and
still remember the promise. The utterance “I‟ll be there. In and out. Just a
quickie.” meant she was giving him the solution to their problem.
Dialogue 34
Jane : You know me. I never do anything without thinking it through.
Jasmine : What does he do? Jane
: He’s in construction. He is a big-time contractor. He’s gone as
much as I am, so it’s perfect.
This conversation happened when Jane and Jasmine were doing rock- climbing. Jane told her best friend that she was
going to marry soon. Jane‟s utterances were included in instrumentality feature because their conversation
omitted Jane‟s feeling. Although the conversation happened between friends, and it was a heart-warming topic, but the conversation was focused on discovering
facts and getting information about John. There was no special feeling involved.
3. Status and Control
Men tend to use language to show their power. They usually talk assertively to show their authoritative. They are the one that usually control the
conversation. Dialogue 35
John : Going again. Where‟d you learn to shoot like that?
Jane :
Beginner’s luck.

This conversation happened at the festival between Jane and John. Jane played the shooting target and pretended that she did not know how to shot. She
pretended to miss the target and lost. After she had played, John also played the game. Unlike her, he played seriously, hit some target and got a little bear doll. He
said that it was just a “beginner‟s luck.” Jane felt like she was being
underestimated by John and asked for another chance. At the second time, she played seriously and hit almost all targets. In the end, she got a very big doll bear.
There was an utterance found that categorized as status and control. Jan e‟s
utterances “Beginner‟s luck” showed that she wanted to show her skill and she did not want to be defeated by John.
Dialogue 36
Jane : There was a struggle over the material. This tea sandwich of a
man, he got his hands on them first. But I won.
John : Of course you did.
Jane :
They’re a bit green, so we have to reupholster the sofas and definitely get a new rug.
Maybe a Persian. This dialogue happened between Jane and John at Smith‟s house. John came
back from work and Jane was telling him about the new curtain that she had just bought. There were two utterances from Jane that were considered as status and
control. Jane‟s utterances exhibited her ability and knowledge. In the line “There was a struggle over the material. This tea sandwich of a man, he got his hands on
them first. But I won”, she showed her husband that she was able to win the curtain over someone that also wanted the same curtain. In the next line, Jane said

This dialogue happened between John and Jane via phone. Jane was observing and giving John commands in their spying van and John was the one
who executed the plan to kidnap their last target. Jane‟s line was considered as
status and control because it expressed her superiority over her husband. She gave her husband some commands that were a must for John to follow, but he felt
annoyed because he thought that Jane was rough.
Dialogue 38
John : It‟s called evasive driving, sweetheart.
Jane : Hold still.
John : This thing‟s all over the place. How do you drive these things anyway?
Jane : Honey Honey, let me drive.
John : I got it.
Jane :
Move over. Move. I’m the suburban housewife, sweetheart. You move.
John : Fine. Go.
Jane : Go.
This conversation happened when Jane and John were being chased on the road by the assassins. The assassins tried to shoot them. John, who was driving
did some maneuvers to avoid the bullets, but it made Jane uncomfortable. Her utterances were considered as advice because she focused on instrumental act and
told her husband what to do. After a moment, she decided to drive instead of let her husband drove. At first, she asked John to let her drive. In the conversation

she also said “I‟m the suburban housewife” to show her ability and skill in driving
that was more than an average housewife. In this conversation, she sometimes showed her superiority and maintains control by saying some imperative
statements that expressed superiority and wanted to maintain control.

Jane :30 second window. I cut the power, you grab the kid. Simple and
clean. Got it?
John : Got it.
This dialogue happened in the spying van before John kidnaped the target. Jane told John about their plan as fast as she can. Jane‟s utterance was considered
as status and control because she gave a command to John and it was a must to be followed. Her
utterance “I cut the power, you grab the kid” showed the superiority and maintain control. She showed that she already knew about that and she knew
how to handle that situation.
Dialogue 40
John : I don‟t exactly keep count, but... I would say... High 50s, low 60s. I‟ve
been around the block, but the important thing is... Jane
: 312.
John : 312? How?
Jane : Some were two at a time.
This conversation happened in the spying van. John asked Jane about her experience by asking her to count the total number of her target. Jane did not
really care about it and let John tell her about the total number of his target. He was proudly talking about his target when Jane interrupted him. There were two
utterances from Jane that were considered as status and control because she

than John‟s targets.
4. Less Emotionally Responsive
Men rarely show their emotion to hide their feelings. They will respond as little as possible to hide their feelings, because they think that showing their
emotion means that they are weak and pathetic.

Seller : Hey, step right up, ladies and gentlemen. Try your luck. How about
you, little lady? Wanna try your luck? Win a prize? Jane
: Yeah. All right.
This conversation happened when Jane and John first met. They were walking in a festival when someone offered them to try to hit some targets on one
of the shows. Jane just answered the seller invitation by answering it with minimal cue.

John : Tried something new?
Jane : Uh-huh. How was Atlanta?
The conversation happened in Smith‟s house when Jane and John having their dinner together. John asked her about the cooking and she just gave a
minimal response to his question she did not want to bring the conversation about her cooking further and changed the conversation to the new direction.
