a. Mystery
One of the themes in Sherlock Holmes TV-Series the Final Problem Episode is mystery which is reflected through the use of several types of figures of speech
in the plot of the television series. The plot contains a number of puzzles and tricks which can be the trigger in reflecting the themes of the story. Moreover, the
themes can be identified through the sequence of the events that is carried by the characters. As in the following example, the plot reflects the theme of mystery.
MYCROFT :
“Who are you?”
CHILD :
“You know who”
Datum 02 This example of irony reflects the theme of mystery as it identifies the plot
which occurs in the beginning of the scene when Mycroft is tricked by Sherlock in order to make him tell the truth about Eurus. By identifying the plot, it explains
the mystery which must be revealed by Mycroft. It shows how Mycroft tries to understand the circumstances that happen on him in order to reveal who the child
actually is, who the director of the trick is, and what for the trick is. Another example of the theme of irony which is reflected by the use of irony is presented
in datum 04. SHERLOCK
: ―Conclusion three: you are terrified of her”
MYCROFT :
“You have no idea what you‟re dealing with.”
Datum 04 The statement in the dialogue in datum 04 applies irony of situation since it
contains of discrepancy between two statements. In the scene, Sherlock mentions
her
referring to Eurus to make Mycroft reveal Eurus‘s identity. However, Mycroft contradicts his statement by stating the opposite of the intended meaning. In that
context,
you have no idea what you‟re dealing with intends to give an
understanding to Sherlock that Sherlock is better not know Eurus because she is dangerous. It describes the truth that must be revealed by Sherlock in order to
answer the identity of Eurus. The next example in datum 17 is the theme of mystery which is reflected through the use of litotes.
JOHN :
“What is it?
SHERLOCK : ―It‘s a drone.‖
JOHN :
“I can see that.”
Datum 17 The dialogue in datum occurs when a drone that brings something coming
to Sherlock‘s flat while Sherlock, Mycroft, and John talk about Eurus. John‘s statement does not only ask what the thing is because the already knew that it is a
drone. By using litotes, the intended meaning of John‘s statement is to ask what it is carried in the drone. It describes their conditions in Sherlock‘s flat. They try to
identify something that is brought in the drone whether it is dangerous or not. In that context, this example of figures of speech is used to reveal the actual events
in the plot that must be faced by the characters which show the theme in this television series.
The use of hyperbole also reflects the theme of mystery in this television series. The example is presented as follows.
EURUS:
“So many days not lived, so many words unsaid.”
Datum 52 The exaggerate describing the condition of someone is an example of the
hyperbole. In the scene, Sherlock tries to solve the puzzle from Eurus. He tries to find to whose the coffin is. In that context, how Sherlock tries to convey the
puzzle is triggered as the theme of mystery. Furthermore, the use of paradox also reflects the theme of mystery. The example is presented in the following datum.
MYCROFT
: ―Why don‘t you come out and show yourself? I don‟t have time for this.”
CHILD :
“We have time, brother dear. All the times in the world.
”
Datum 01 The contradiction in the dialogue in datum 01 is identified as paradox. It is
used to describe Mycroft‘s condition when he is tricked by Sherlock. In the scene, Mycroft feels shock with the sudden appearance of the child while he is watching
a movie. He does not realize what happen to him and he tries to reveal the child‘s identity and the purpose of the trick. Thus, in that context, the condition of
Mycroft is identified as the theme of mystery.
