a. Paradox
Paradox is an expression which is used to reveal the actual or real meaning by applying a contradiction between two or more entities. In paradox, the
contradiction relates to the relationship within the expression. It applies context which seems to contradict itself, yet it conveys the truth within its contradiction.
Paradox somehow contains an absurdity on its meaning which forces the audiences to examine through the understanding of all the conditions and
circumstances. Hence, it needs a careful examination in elaborating the sense on its meaning before understanding and deciding what the statement actually means.
In the television series, paradox is applied to express the contradictory situation which seems to be true since Mycroft refuses the reality that he deals with. The
scene intends to reveal the id entity of Eurus, Mycroft‘s sister, which builds the
plot in the story. The use of paradox is presented as follows.
MYCROFT: ―Why don‘t you come out and show yourself? I don‟t have time for this.”
CHILD :
“We have time, brother dear. All the times in the world.”
Datum 01 The dialogue in datum 01 happens in the beginning scene of the television
series when Mycroft is being tricked by Sherlock in order to make him convey the identity of Eurus. In that context, Mycroft tells he does not have a time. Hence,
his statement gives an implied meaning that he will not follow the games with a reason it will waste his times. By stating a contradictory statement, he aims to
emphasize that his time is very precious. Besides, the child argues his statement by saying the common fact. In reality, for humans, the time never runs out
because humans live in the circle of time. Thus, there is no excuse for escaping
the games until he conveys the truth. Moreover, the statement can be considered
as paradox because it contains a contradiction fact. The next use of paradox in this television series also expresses a contradictory condition of Mycroft is explained
in datum 03.
MYCROFT :
“Impossible.”
CHILD :
“Nothing‟s impossible. You of all people know that.”
Datum 03 The dialogue in datum 03 is uttered by Mycroft and the child when they
are still on the trick used to reveal the identity of Mycroft‘s sister. Mycroft
declares that he really does not recognize the child because he is trapped in impossible condition. However, the child contradicts it by saying the common
fact. The fact of humans believes that everything in this world is possible and he also realizes and believes it. Thus, the statement is aimed to bring Mycroft
confused and down until he speaks the truth. Yet, the statement sounds absurd and illogical since it is difficult to be understood logically. However, the statement is
considered as paradox since it applies a contradictory condition. Then, the following example of the use of paradox is shown in datum 18.
The utterances applied a paradox in order to offend Mycroft for his actions and policies.
SHERLOCK: ―John and I will take the windows; you take the stairs. Help get Mrs. Hudson out too.‖
MYCROFT : ―Me?‖ SHERLOCK:
“You‟re closer.”
MYCROFT :
“You‟re faster.”
SHERLOCK: ―Speed differential won‘t be as critical as the distance.‖ Datum 18
The dialogue between Sherlock and Mycroft occurs when they must escape from the grenade explosion at Sherlock‘s flat. In this scene, Sherlock
expresses an utterance you are closer which intends to give an order to Mycroft
to go out from the flat by using the stairs. Also, he has to help Mrs. Hudson to go
out too because he is the closer one. Yet, Mycroft contradicts it by stating you are faster
which means he refuses the agreement. However, Sherlock conveys the common fact that the distance is more critical than speed in that context. Then, he
has no excuses to refuse it because the condition forces him to do so. Another example of the use of paradox which intends to offend Mycroft actions and
policies is presented as follows. SHERLOCK :
“He did his best.”
MRS. HOLMES:
“Then he‟s very limited.”
Datum 64 In the given example in datum 64, the dialogue occurs at the end of the
television series when Mycroft is asked by his parents about his actions and policies towards his sister. In that context, Sherlock tries to defend Mycroft‘s
actions and policies by saying what Mycroft has been done are the best decision
for their sister. Besides, Mrs. Holmes does not agree with it by stating that he is very limited
. It means Mycroft‘s action is not wise because he does not count the consequences and takes a deep observation through the condition. Mrs. Holmes
shows the com mon truth about the universal human‘s fact that humans has limit in
every side. Thus, it needs to be wise to decide whether they have to do or not by looking beyond the circumstances.
Furthermore, the last example of the use of paradox is given in datum 41 in order to give wide understanding in examining paradox. It is used to apply a
sentimental context to increase the nuance in the story. JOHN:
“I know that you‟re scared, but you should also be very proud.”
Datum 41 This expression is uttered by John when he forces to shoot the Governor in
order to finish the puzzle which is given by Eurus. In the context, John contradicts
the condition by using the words scared and proud which intend to calm and
encourage the Governor‘s feelings and to decrease the Governor‘s fears. In addition, he tries to show his sympathy by reminding him that what he has done is
his sacrifice for his wife and she must be proud. Yet, the fact is there is no connection between scared and proud. The Governor must still face his fear and
the expression is only words with contradictory meaning with his condition.
