Preliminary Field Testing RESEARCH RESULT AND DISSCUSSION

67 from world Englishes. Those comments and suggestions were used to revise and improve the designed material.

E. Main Product Revision

The main product revision was carried out to revise and improve the designed material. The revision based on the comments and feedbacks were gathered in preliminary field testing step. The expert validation and user validation gave many suggestions which were used to revise the designed material until it met the objectives and students’ need. The researcher revised several parts of the designed material. The first suggestion was to add more interesting topics and activities. In the designed material, the researcher had already provided eight material and sixteen activities from four topics. Since the material designed was a supplementary material, the researcher would added more activities which are still related to the topic of the Intermediate Listening Class. Therefore, the users of the designed material could find various listening audios or videos and activities which used to improve listening skill. The second suggestion was to give level of difficulties in each material. In the material given to the respondents, the researcher has not did that. However, the level of difficulties in each listening audio or video would help user to practice from the easier item. Therefore, the researcher would rename the listening audio and add numbered to indicate the level of difficulties since the website did not support items’ leveling. 68 The third suggestion was to revise some grammatical mistakes in the designed material. There were some grammatical mistakes in the designed material especially in the instructions and questions. The grammatical mistakes can raise confusion on the user while doing the exercises or activities in the designed material. Therefore, the researcher would revise the instructions and questions in order to make the user understand what to do. The fourth suggestion was to make the learning objectives clearer. In the designed material, the researcher defined two learning objectives. However based on the expert validation, the researcher should make the learning objectives clearer. The researcher accepted the suggestion because it was important to make the learning objectives applicable and achievable. Therefore in the revised material, the researcher made the learning objectives more explicit and measureable. The fifth suggestion was to make the layout more attractive and to simplify the features on it. In the designed material, the researcher used free and easy platforms which share gamification features called Edmodo. In this case, Edmodo provides its website layout and features. Therefore, the researcher cannot modify the layout and the features. However instead of simplifying the features, the researcher would provide tutorial video about Edmodo. In addition, the researcher provided clear explanation and instructions in the revised material. The sixth suggestion was to add non-native English material in the revised material. The non-native English audios are aimed to accustom students to the world Englishes. The additional audio can be used by Singaporean English, PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 69 Australian English, and more. In this case, the researcher added that material in the listening links. Therefore, it is an optional audio for the students. F. The Final Version of the Designed Material After revising the designed material based on the preliminary field testing result, the final version of the supplementary listening material using gamification in the Intermediate Listening Class was finished. The final version of the designed materialis presented in Appendix C. In the final version of the designed materials, the researcher still used Edmodo as a platform which share gamification features. The material presented in Appendix C consists of two parts. The first part was the lesson plan. In the lesson plan, the researcher provided the learning objectives, activities, and criteria to get points and badges. The second part was screenshot of the material in Edmodo like listening material, listening links, quizzes, assignments, badges, and grading book. In this part, the researcher explains the descriptions of the final version of the designed material. The researcher provided ten listening material and twenty learning activities in the final version of the designed material. The set of listening materials cover four topics. Each topic consists of several listening audio. While listening to the audio, the user of the material should take an important note. The note will help users to answer the quizzes and assignments. Each audio contains a quiz and an assignment. The quizzes are in a form of true or false, multiple choice, short question and answer, speller, online test, or space game. In addition, 70 the assignments are in a form of online documents, attachments, or embedded links. The first topic in the final version of the designed material is mobile phones. It consists of four audio entitled Smart Cars for the Smartphone Generation, Kenya Embraces Mobile Phones Technology to Educate Children, Mobile Phones, and Cell Phone Use May Take Toll. The second topic is Milestone in Technology. This topic consists of two audio entitled Information Society and Surfing the Web to Heat Your Home. Then, the next topic is Dessert from the Desert. In this topic, there are two audios entitled Pistachio a love story and Food Deserts: a Mirage or Reality? The last topic is Pheromones. It consists of two audios entitled Eau de Deception and Chompin’ Invasive. The ten listening materials were arranged according to the level of difficulty. In this case, the number given in the material indicates the level of difficulty. Each topic has two or more levels. Therefore, the users can start to use the material from the first level easily. In the final version of the designed material, the researcher also adds more listening links to give various listening material. In addition, the researcher also provided other listening activities from other platform which still related to the topics. The activity is a vocabulary test which can be shared in the social media. It aimed to help the users to find more interesting activities. 71

CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the conclusions and recommendations. It consists of two parts. The first is conclusions which contain the summary of the study. The second is recommendations which contain the recommendations from the researcher for materials users and future researchers.

A. Conclusions

This study is concluded to answer the research question. The research question was : “what does a set of supplementary listening materials using gamification for the Intermediate Listening Class in the English Language Education Study Program look like ?” To answer the question, the researcher adopted RD cycle by Borg and Gall 1983 which consists of ten steps to develop and validate educational products. However, the researcher chose five steps of RD cycle for instance research and information collecting, planning, developing preliminary form of product, preliminary field testing, and main product revision. The research and information collecting step comprises interview and classroom observations. It aims to find the topics and skills which need to be achieved in the Intermediate Listening Class and the students’ characteristics. The second step is planning which includes defining skills, stating objectives, determining course sequence, and small scale feasibility testing. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
